It’s back to basketball tonight. Anyone else thrilled by that? I am. I’m checking out North at West. Two winning streaks on the line. I’m looking forward to it.
OK, so who are the best forwards in the area right now? Boys or girls, it doesn’t matter.

As the February nights become brisker and brisker, that can only mean one thing — March is approaching, and along with it — sub-state basketball season.
Most teams have either 5 or 6 games remaining on the schedule and several are still jockying for position in the ever-crucial top-4 seed for a home game in the sub-state. There are plenty of good races to watch, but I decided to take a look at the two area sub-states for Class 6A and 5A.
There is plenty to debate on, so leave me a comment and let me know where you think I went wrong, or right. Let me know.
If anything, you can just use this as a update to the standings and make your own predictions. Let me know!

Did you watch the Super Bowl last night? If you didn’t, I’d love to hear why.
Favorite commercial? Budweiser and Doritos had some funny ones?
Favorite food? I love my cheese/hamburger/Rotel chip dip. It’s a staple at any party I have.
Anything else on your mind? Feel free to discuss.

So where will you be this week?
City League swimming is this week, we’ve got full slates of basketball games, City League wrestling is on Saturday, bowling is wrapping up.
What event do you have to be at this week? What shouldn’t even the most casual fan miss?

Wow, what a night Friday was. I have to admit to being so proud of The Eagle sports staff for we all put together for today’s paper and online at VarsityKansas.com. The photos by our photo staff and video by our photo staff — Travis Heying, Jaime Green, Fernando Salazar, Kelly Glasscock — are amazing and captivating.
The writers had so much fun with this — Kirk Seminoff, Tony Adame, Jeff Lutz, Taylor Eldridge, Brooks Seeley, Lionel Tipton. We were on tight deadlines, trying to get everything done so our designers (Ryan Johnson, Tom Seals, Gary Karr) could get everything in the paper, edited and looking good. And online, Josh Wood, did an amazing job of putting everything together.
It’s certainly not often that I call attention to our staff, but I’m so proud of this paper. We took a Friday night of basketball and instead of telling you about the games, we went behind them.
So enjoy it!

Following City League athletic director Bill Faflick around four gyms Friday night brought dozens of “Who’s this guy with Bill?” looks.
Faflick doesn’t necessarily have rock-star status when he enters a high school, but everyone sure knows him. And he knows almost all of them by name.
Shadowing the league’s AD for five hours, I thought it could be extremely fascinating or extremely boring — it was somewhere in the middle. If all is running smoothly at the gyms, Faflick doesn’t have to do much more than check in with the officiating crew, talk with building administrators, and observe. (In fact, the only out of the ordinary thing he did Friday night was help move something blocking a fire exit.)
But the rides between gyms are where I found out what his challenges are (and no, not his driving skills).

I’m sitting down to make a tight deadline on two stories as part of our special high school basketball coverage for VarsityKansas.com and for Saturday’s Eagle. You won’t want to miss this coverage.
But what I want to know from you is where you were tonight and what your scores are.

Well, it’s an early day for me. I’ll be working on a special story here before 7 a.m. But that’s what makes this day so wonderful — We have a sweet Saturday sports section planned for you. Instead of the normal game stories from Friday nights, we’re going to have stories of fans, coaches and players that you probably didn’t expect. We’ll have photos, stories, videos.
I can’t wait myself to see it all in the paper on Saturday and online at varsitykansas.com. I wish I could tell you all about it, but frankly, I want you to be surprised when you see it.
So what game will you be watching tonight? Or this weekend?

With Blake Bell and Joseph Randle choosing not to play in the Shrine Bowl (and who really expected them to?), here are the changes:
Jace Hubert of Olpe High has been added to the 2010 Kansas Shrine Bowl East All-Star Team. (He replaced Washburn Rural’s Travis Tuiloma.)
Miguel Johns of Newton High has been added to the 2010 Kansas Shrine Bowl West All-Star Team.
Matt Klein of Wichita Bishop Carroll High has been added to the 2010 Kansas Shrine Bowl West All-Star Team.
