Smithson’s view of women reporters
Oct. 1, 2007 @ 11:45 a.m. by JoannaHere’s a question from our Question-And-Answer forum that will die soon here as everything will go to the blog:
Given the recent interview with Randy Smithson, and the discussion regerding the issue of female reporters in sports writing, would you be willing to debate Mr. Smithson live on his morning radio show with Chris Allison? This would provide a legitimate forum to attempt to understand the mindset of college coaches (or former college coaches).
I wrote about Smithson’s comments on his morning radio show in a column that ran in Sunday’s paper — click here for the story. Chris Allison asked me to go on the show last week, but I had a previous commitment so I couldn’t do it.
I wouldn’t mind talking on the radio about the issue, but there’s no need to make it a debate. Smithson thinks like he does. This is not a major thing that needs to be blown up.
In my 11 years in Wichita, I’ve never had a coach refuse to talk to me because I’m a girl. Some have tried to get out of interviews with me because they think I’m a jinx, but not one has ever intimated that I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Although click here for someone who obviously thinks differently. And for the record, I have never played organized football. Although those pick-up games with my brothers and the neighborhood kids when I was growing up were downright entertaining.
