The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

It’s Friday!

Oct. 12, 2007 @ 8:20 a.m. by Joanna

There’s so many meanings in that title, don’t you think? I mean, it’s the last day of the work/school week. And, hey, it’s Friday night football.

But before we get to tonight, how about South’s sophomore backup quarterback Zach Villarreal who threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns in his first start. Wow. That’s impressive. Of course, that was slightly overshadowed by Southeast’s Joseph Randle (276 rushing yards) and Trezz Tillman (164 rushing). But still.

Getting away from football, state girls tennis starts today, with Kapaun looking to three-peat at 5A, someone in the area trying to do something at 6A (KC schools continue to dominate the biggest class), and of course, Collegiate and Independent are playing today at Riverside Tennis Center in 3-2-1A.

One of tonight’s most interesting game interesting games is East at Derby. Why? Because it’s East. That’s good enough to draw a big crowd to the Panthers’ stadium.

I personally like Wellington at Mulvane. Two good teams in a tough district opener.

Alright, since I already touched on these games earlier in the week, that’s all I’ve got for now. What’s on your mind?

What are your thoughts about some of the areas smaller schools. Hesston and Remington play tonight. Hesston may not be tested until they see Garden Plain (again).

Is there decent 2-1A team that will Challenege Smith Center?

This is just a gut feeling, but get ready for Derby’s Coach (Brandon Clark) to open up the play book (ala Bill Snyder) and throw everything but the kitchen sink at East. If Derby wins is it really an Upset? Nothing personal… Just think Derby is getting better and we could mention Derby as a spoiler yes, but UPSET?

Yeah, What are your thoughts about some of the areas smaller schools? Area, meaning the other half of the state. I thought the website said Varsity “KANSAS”. There are some schools out that way that can play great football as well. Take Holcomb and Lakin in 3A, it seems that they might be heading for a show down of unbeaten’s next week, with not only the Hi- Plains Championship on the line, but the possible #1 seed in their district. I love reading you site, just wish you covered more of the whole state.

I know the current rain is predicted to end by 5pm. Anyone know what the chances are of the games around Wichita being cancelled tonight because of the weather? It seems like it will blow by and be done by gametime. Games aren’t called because of 100% chance of mud, are they?

I wasn’t at the game but from reading there stats over this season I would say Remington had a one-prong offense which is the pass. Evidently Hesston shut it down judging from the lopsided score.
