Friday’s games (10-12)

Oct. 13, 2007 @ 12:29 a.m. by Joanna

Alright, people, here’s a recap for you. Because, yes, you CANNOT wait until you see the paper in the morning. So here’s your tennis results.

Ha! just kidding. If you’re on varsitykansas.com right now, you’re here for football.

East at Derby: First of all, in response to a reader who didn’t think a Derby win over East would be an upset — this was an upset. Don’t think you can disagree with that. (27-21 OT, Derby) According to correspondent Taylor Eldridge, East had at least five chances to put this game away and failed to do it.

Penalties in overtime pushed the Aces back to the 35 and they missed a field goal try. Derby then scored on its first play in OT, a Jake Snodgrass run. According to Taylor, it was the same play Snodgrass had run 28 times previously in the game — QB keeper.

This is a game East should have won. Will the Aces still go to the playoffs? I believe it. But there are some definite problems — Arthur Brown left after the first quarter, reaggravating an ankle injury suffered in last week’s win over Heights. He told Taylor “My change of direction is fine, but as far as reaching my top speed, I couldn’t do it.” Arthur added that he’d be getting an X-ray on Monday.

Bryce Brown was also hurt on what probably should have been the game-winning scoring drive. He got hurt at the Derby 42 with 42 seconds remaining. He came back but was hobbling.

Congrats to Derby in the upset. Snodgrass was a stud, as usual, running for 174 and passing for 125.

Goddard at Hutchinson: Goddard played Hutch (a 21-7 winner) close, thanks to Logan Watkins, who, according to Duane Frazier, kept the Lions alive by scrambling on every play. But Hutchinson stopped Goddard, which had 76 offensive plays, four times inside the Salt Hawks’ 30.

Garden Plain at W. Independent: These teams scored three teams in the game’s first four minutes (71-28 GPlain). Extending this game even more, there were 19 first-half penalties, 25 overall. Garden Plain had 16.

Logan Dold keeps adding to his numbers. He had 264 rushing and scored on the second play. Garden Plain also scored twice on defense and sacked Independent quarterback David Fleming seven times. Fleming still had 250 passing yards, although he was intercepted four times.

Wellington at Mulvane: This was my game, and I was impressed. I knew Mulvane (7-0 after the 33-6 victory) had a spectacular offense with Huldon Tharp (181 rushing) and quarterback Jordan Gosch (163 passing). But the defense was darn good, holding a high-scoring Wellington team to 6 points, which came in the game’s final 3 minutes against the Wildcats’ reserves. (And yes, Mulvane, congrats on your cross country team. I keep hearing about them — Duane Frazier wrote about the team early in the season — and know they are on fire heading into the postseason).

Andover Central at Rose Hill: Andover Central (31-14 winner) is still without Jaydan Bird. How long? We don’t know. But it doesn’t look good, considering he was on the sideline in a walking boot and on crutches.

West vs. Kapaun: Kapaun (45-0 winner) intercepted West five times. Anthony Cantele nailed a 50-yard field goal. The dual sports star keeps looking better and better.

Campus at Northwest: Northwest (49-14 winner) got five touchdowns from quarterback Chris Harper, two running, three passing. He also threw for 157 yards. Not bad. TJ Shine had 163 rushing.

Emporia at Heights: Heights (35-14 winner) scored 28 straight points in the third quarter. Quarterback Chris Boyd had 178 passing, hitting Jeff Evans on a 78-yard touchdown pass and a 20-yarder. Evans also returned a punt for 55 yards. Yes, Boyd has taken the starting job from Rick Holladay.

Other notes: McPherson escapes Salina South, Carroll smacks Ark City (although we get no Carroll stats from the home school Ark City), Maize beats North (we think, not really sure. we didn’t get any stats from the home school, Maize), Medicine Lodge beats Cheney (what?! What’s happening there?), Hesston rolls over Remington, Smith Center has yet another shut out (78-0 over Lincoln), South Haven (50-28 over South Central).

Like i said before…its ez to be a star in Wichita, but lets see what the brown boys do against outside teams who dont know or care about the brown boys. teams around here , except for the Crusaders, are scared before they hit the field….WHY

I’m not sure what your point is ko. Bryce Brown was as outstanding as always, while Arthur had an injury that kept him out of action after the early goiing. I give lots of credit to Jake Snodgrass, who was super. Why do you have to put someone else down in order to bask in your victory?

  3. Levi says:

Hey Mark, Bryce was really outstanding when he threw that ball into the endzone and caused his team some major field position. I wonder if he knew that he was “showing up” an endzone bleacher full of nothing but 7th and 8th graders. The Browns are not as special as everyone around here thinks. It will be great to see them look average at best up against some true D-1 talent.

  4. Shocked says:

It always amazes me with the jealousy that people show. Truly there are a few kids in the area that are D1 talents but the people who always down talk them are just jealous. What everyone needs to remember that these are just kids and make mistakes even though they are D1 talent. All of these kids have trouble with teammates, coaches, parents, fans and people that dont even know them because of jealousy of their talents. Instead of embracing them and saying now everyone gets a shot at being noticed because trust me it is a trickle down effect, highlight tapes are looked at and if a player is good then they will be contacted through their coach. I have truly seen the bitterness of this community and surrounding communities over these players and it amazes me with the stupidity that is shown, it is really childish, grow up!!!

  5. Mark says:

East almost always has bad field position coming off kickoffs, because the kicks are short. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was minor in the whole scheme of things. East had several opportunities to put the game away and didn’t do it. As I said before, Derby deserves the credit.
I wonder if Bryce even knew that tossing the ball in the endzone stands was a penalty. The stadiums where the Aces normally play don’t even have endzone stands. The middle school kids were probably calling for the ball. Usually he just drops the ball on the ground in the endzone upon crossing the line. Sorry, Levi, people like Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Charlie Weis and the like don’t personally fly into Wichita to recruit people who won’t perform against top D-1 talent. I’m thinking those guys know a little bit more about the college game and who will fit in than the people posting on this blog do.

  6. Levi says:

Hey Mark, we will see. The three coaches you named do fly all over the country to scout talent. It makes me wonder if people knew that the Wichita deal was just kind of a stop-over for coaches who were actually going down to Oklahoma City and Tulsa at the same time for other deals like this. I am not hating on these two, I just dont think that they are that good. Maybe you guys should step out and look at some other big time talent at the High School level, regardless of the state. Ive yet to say that these two kids are great High School athletes but they will not make that big of an impact at the next level. It may be kind of confusing to you guys here because you dont have a major D-1 football school close by but, talent like this is a dime a dozen at the next level. Not all of them pan out, most dont actually. Im just saying they dont look that much better than other D-1 talent.

  7. DG says:

    Hey Mark -
Question - Why in the world would any of the Middle School kids at the Derby / East game be calling out to Bryce for the ball? They were ALL from Derby… Let me guess, they were hoping to have him autograph it first right??? I’m thinking… NOT!

  8. Ted says:

    Hey Levi-

In your 12:34 am post, you said that Kansas doesn’t have a good
D-1 school near Wichita. Perhaps my ability at reading a map isn’t as good as yours, but Manhattan and Lawrence are not that far away. Check out the top 25 teams in the USA Today and AP Polls, and you may learn that KSU and KU are both listed. KU is in the first BCS ranking of the top 25 college football teams, and they are in the top 15.

  9. Levi says:

Hey Ted, your ability at reading a map is obviously not that good. If you want to get technical Oklahoma State University is actually the closest major D-1 football program near Wichita. There is not a D-1 school within two hours of Wichita and in my opinion that really skews peoples perceptions of talented D-1 athletes. If you want an example think about this. In Stillwater, Oklahoma (where Oklahoma State is since you seem like you might need geographic help) back in 1996 the high school team had a HUGE load of talent. They had 7 kids off of that team go on to play AND START at major Division 1 schools. One of those kids was a guy by the name of Matt Holiday (who didnt play college football). Since you seem like you know sports I will assume that you know he now plays baseball in the Majors. No one in the Stillwater area made a huge deal out of these guys because people around big time programs know that it takes more than just some good stats in High School to make a D-1 talent. Again I will reiterate my point, Arthur Brown is not that good. Go watch him play, dont believe what you read in the Eagle AND next year we will see if he is that good. If he is as good as you people say he is then he should be starting next year as a true frosh. We will see

  10. Just Me says:

Levi, bringing up the talent in 1996 is the best you can do? I can top that. The City League in 1980 had twelve players sign DI and five of them went on to the NBA, so I guess I dont understand your point about bringing up the past. I officiate HS football and am a basketball official in the Pac-10, MVC and Big 12, so I do know a little bit about talent. I was the white hat the the Wichita East/Dodge City game and yes, Authur Brown is that good. His little brother, however, is better. Auther will put on some bulk in the next couple of years and most likely you will see him playing free safety in the NFL. Stillwater does not have as many HS teams as Wichita does. Chop out three HS in Wichita and East or North or Heights could easily have that many DI players on their team. Too many schools water down the talent pool at each school.
