Heights in Northeast Kansas?

Oct. 17, 2007 @ 12:50 p.m. by

It seems kind of strange to think of Wichita Heights as a Northeast Kansas team. But if you look at the regional cross country schedule, you’ll find the Falcons firmly planted in Topeka on Saturday morning. Heights is the unfortunate traveler to a Class 6A regional, which includes two Johnson County teams, two Douglas County teams and one Leavenworth County teams.

Heights is simply a victim of changing geography. More 6A schools continue to pop up in Northeast Kansas while fewer remain in the rest of the state.

One team from the Wichita area was forced to go to the regional meet at Topeka. Heights, which is at 5301 N. Hillside, is the closest to Topeka.

The rest of the five 6A schools from the City League will compete in town.

You’re implying that this is dumb logic, and I would agree. Because Heights happens to be a few minutes north of other city league schools, they get treated as if they’re in Emporia! Same goes for 5A football with west-side Carroll having to make a 4-hour one-way trip to Liberal every other year, while two other city league 5A teams have no more than a 25-minute trip within their district. I don’t have a solution, just a gripe.

Seriously, can we get same dang cross country articles. Last week was regionals, this weekend is state. And nothing on the hardest regional in the state at El Dorado lake, for 3A girls. Come on…

They won’t have anything on cross country. Nice try though. They are just going to say they mentioned that regional at the bottom of the article about Heights. I don’t get it, how come they don’t write about the good teams around this area?
