Did Bishop Carroll backdoor its way to the CL football title?
Oct. 19, 2007 @ 11:13 a.m. by JoannaCarroll coach Alan Schuckman was actually asked that question Thursday night after East lost to Southeast, finishing the league at 5-2 and resulting in Carroll, which  was 5-1, winning the title.
I completely disagree that Carroll won this by the back door. Carroll did what it was supposed to do, winning five of its six City League games. East didn’t do what it needed to do, win six of its seen league games (the CL title is based on winning percentage because some schools — Carroll, Heights and Kapaun — only have six league games, while the others have seven).
So was this title — Carroll’s sixth in 12 years — less exciting because it came two weeks later?
“No, I don’t think so at all,” Schuckman said. “We really hadn’t talked about it much since we lost. Generally if you get a loss, you’re pretty much out of contention if you only have six games. Everything we’ve talked about is the district championship from this point forward. Last night we had our bonfire and pep rally, and kids were checking scores and getting texts and letting me know what was going on. I think they were pretty excited. I had a person tell me, how does it feel to back-door it into a league championship. I really was taken back because I feel like we played one of the toughest schedules in the league.”
 Schuckman added:
“I remember one year we lost to Liberal (in district play) … we couldn’t run the ball because we had no timeouts left, and we ended up losing. Then we get on the bus and find out that North had beaten Northwest and it resulted in us winning the league championship. It put a smile back on my face…. Last night, my phone was ringing off the hook. People are pretty excited. It’s great for our kids.”

No, Carroll won the title. East had its chance and didn’t get the job done. Nobody should take this accomplishment away from the Eagles, becuase Schuckman and his team earned it, and nobody at East should begrudge Carroll the title. In the City League, you don’t ever backdoor your way into a title, unless one team is clearly that much better than everyone else and somehow loses, and that’s very rare.

I have to disagree with all of you. I see the point that Carroll won the games it needed but East didnt. I honestly believe that the CL is just a bad conference in the state, it might be one of the worst. There is no depth, there is a huge drop off…it normally goes.

Carroll did somewhat back into it, but that’s how it works sometimes. They won it and congratulations to them. I believe it does not mean that much; if all city league teams played the same number of games it would mean more. Besides, Carroll has much higher goals than the city league.

Kapaun beats East, East beats Carroll, Carroll beats everyone else. What do you want a do over? BC won fair and square congratulations to BC and we’ll try again next year to beat them.

I have a funny feeling that where ever Authur Brown goes to college that his little brother will follow and go to that area high school. If he doesnt and stays at East for his SR year, then FIND A QB WHO CAN THROW THE BALL!!!. Coach B, your son CAN NOT THROW, so do yourself and the entire school a favor and find someone who can. You cant hand your tailback the ball thirty times a game and expect to win, this is not 8-man football clown.

Bishop Carroll clearly won the title by beating everyone other than East and East lost the title themselves by losing games they needed to win. CONGRATULATIONS TO BISHOP CARROLL—– WAY TO GO GUYS!!!! Try again next year everyone else — the Eagles won the title fair and square let it be don’t be jealous.

Not only did BC have the best record in the city leage, but they also had the toughest schedule. Of the five top teams (BC, E, NW, KMC, H) they were the only one that had to play all of the other four. Congratulations!

Ok maybe BC did win the city leage title, but tell me how a 5A school can make into the playoff playing the likes of Ark City and Winfield. Is BC part of the AVL or the City leage or both? I have always thought it funny that BC and KMC are 5A and in the AVL and can still win the City Leage title. Both KMC and BC should be 6A and not play schools that don’t have a chance of winning, the same goes for Derby, all of these schools should be 6A. Just a thought on my part, but way to go BC.

Jim,
That was a pretty ignorant post.
Here’s how it works. Kapaun & BC are in the City League by choice. They play other 5A teams in District play because of their school size. They don’t really have a choice on that. They have no affiliation with AVL.

Jim,
You could not of made yourself look any more dumb than you did on that post. If your going to talk on here learn how the districe play works in kansas. Also you don’t just choose to be 5a or 6a!

Hey Jim,
Maybe you would want to foot the bill for teams like Derby to drive all over the state and play other teams not in the City League. Last time I checked Derby was still 6a and they play local teams because they are close.

Jim,
I went to SE, let’s see 2000 kids vs 900 kids at KMC? I wish we had the size of school as 6a schools. Speaking of school know you facts before you post.
