Bryce Brown a 5-Star of 2009
Oct. 24, 2007 @ 12:21 p.m. by JoannaAccording to Scout.com, East running back Bryce Brown is part of the site’s first 10 5-Star prospects for 2009. Here’s what it says on Bryce:
At 6-foot-0, 205 pounds, Bryce Brown is a powerful runner that also has nice speed. The one thing that is most overlooked when projecting running backs is vision, and Brown seems to be able to “feel” the defenders and make moves accordingly. He is everything that you want a running back to be wrapped up in one package.
- Greg Powers, Scout.com Midlands
Bryce has a chance Thursday night against South to break his own City League rushing record. He currently has 1,647 rushing yards, and needs 126 to tie his record that he set last season.

This is the same website that ranked notre dame’s last two recruiting classes as top 10 classes..we see how good they are. Brown is a d1 player and a good player but he’s not great. I’ve seen better backs in high school.

I hope he breaks his record. I also hope the coach will pull him in the 3rd or 4th quarter, with the win and the record intact. South’s defense can’t stop anybody.

Bryce is a very good back and brings a lot to every play. I think there is some growing to do, with respect to maturity, but some kids mature at different rates. Arthur seems to have a better grasp of his emotions.
The person posting above was correct though. It is difficult to place much stock in some of these ratings. Jimmy Claussen was touted well above all others, but he doesn’t have near the talent of many freshman quarterbacks that are out on the field this year in college, or even a few that are on the sidelines.

I think that some people forget that Bryce is only sixteen yrs. old. In my opinion, I think that Bryce is one of the top backs in the country regardless of the class. Speed, size, vision, and power and he is also elusive. It is rare to find a back with all of those qualities. Thats why d-1 coaches are going crazy over him. You can teach players how to hold on to the ball better and things of that nature. If you go to youtube you can watch film from some of the best in D-1 and the NFL back when they were in highschool. One of the things that stands out to me is how much better the players have gotten obviously. Just to think that Bryce has not even maximized his potential is scary when you know that he can put on 20 to 30 more pounds and still maintain around a 4.3-4.4 forty time. I hear he is a hardworking kid. When he is not playing football, he is training during the offseason. The sky is the limit for him now, so lets just hope to see him playing on Sat. and Sundays in the future. In the meantime lets just enjoy watching him play while we can.

I am about to state my PERSONAL opinion of Bryce, so please, bear with me. Is he a talented individual? Without a doubt. Does he have ALL the tools? No. As a matter of fact, it’s not simply “no”, it’s absolutely not. As a matter of fact, he lacks two major tools that college coaches are going to look for, especially when talking about the OU’s, LSU’s, USC’s of the world; toughness (mental and physical) and ball security. The kid, yes I KNOW he’s a kid, puts the ball on the ground nearly twice a game on average (rough guesstimation) and is constantly limping out of a game or staying down and requiring the trainers to come look at him. Miraculously, he’s back in the lineup one play later. I haven’t seen a miracle like that since Lazarus. Yet, this happens consistently. He needs to grow up, in a hurry, in those two areas before he can be defined as “great”. He’s no Barry Sanders. For that matter, he’s no D’Angelo Evans either.

October 25th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Mental and physical toughness? How many games has he missed due to injury? How many games have you seen him stay down on the field and have trainers come look at him. I seen it once angainst Derby and thats it this season. Most times he carries the ball at least 25 times and sometimes more. Last year against Maize he carried it over 40 times. So you could not be more wrong with the mental and physical toughness part. He gives 100 percent everytime he carries the ball. He does have a little problem with holding on to the ball. Most of his fumbles this season came on the pitch where there was penetration. You can be taught better ways to carry the ball. I will guarantee that every major d-1 program in the country already knows who he is and every single one of them would love for him to choose their university. Also think of this. He is already the all time city leauge carreer rushing leader. He needs just over 125 yards to break the single season record that he set last season and he still has one seson left. That speaks enough in itself. The last time he was held under 100 yards was his freshman seson. If he played for Collegiate, he would have smashed Evans records. When Chris Harper was a freshman there he rushed for over 1000 yards with over a 10 yard average per carry. Thats ok if he is not Barry Sanders cause no one is Barry Sanders. He is probably the best runner that their has ever been in football period.

SoMuch, Brown stayed down on the field THREE times versus West last year; miracles abound! Again, you speak of his physical ability as if it speaks for all the other attributes. Believe it or not, there is more to football than running faster than the other guy. He is a good back. I’m just saying that he isn’t all that you guys are building him up to be. I’ve seen him play and while he does some really nice things, he still does some stuff that makes you wonder.

I wonder how many perfect players are out there? Players in highschool that are ready to turn pro?Kids at 16 that have mastered the game of football? I know that Bryce isnt one of them as well as the rest of the highschool football world. He has lots to learn about the game of football and he has some growning up to do, but didnt we all at the age of 16? If he was just the average player without the spotlight, there would not be anyone constatntly bagging on the kid. He goes out and plays football and breaks records and attracts national attention and now people want to say negative things about him.

Am I bagging? NO! I am simply stating that when classifying a kid a FIVE STAR recruit, I look for things like mental toughness and holding onto the FRIGGIN BALL. SoMuch, you need to take a breath, get off the “I Must Protect All Things Brown” high horse and read what I’ve written. Don’t read your insecurities and motherly intuition INTO my posts. My main contention is that Bryce, while a good player, has too many GLARING issues as a RB to be classified as a five star recruit, period. It’s amazing how many people on here get so caught up in their own argument and their own PERSONAL feelings about specific threads that they are INCAPABLE of having an objective sports conversation.

Hey reality check you are bagging. And don’t tell those people how to do they’re job they are professionals at it. I gurantee you Bryce gets farther than you ever did in football you seemed to make it real far huh. I hope i get the chance to talk to you when he is taken in the nfl draft a few years from now. Just so i can rub it in your face. So much is right how can you not be a great player when you break your own record that no one even came close to touching. And about making it personal you aren’t just making it a football conversation when you question the kids character that’s getting personal some people are just incapable of giving other people their props due to their own negative ways

GetaLife, did I call the kid out for having bad character? No. I said he needed to develop toughness. I never said he was a turd. THAT would be questioning character. I think you have a personal stake in this whole Brown issue, otherwise you wouldn’t get so easily worked up about it. Discussion only happens when both sides of an issue are explored. However, according to you, there is only one side to this story. Good thing he’s already in the Hall of Fame…

I’ll keep it short. Good athletes are born- great athletes are made. They don’t make great athletes in high school. THAT IS WHY IT IS HIGH SCHOOL! For all of those who have played at a level higher than high school and not Madden, one nows that you get better the older you get. COLLEGE COACHES LOOK FOR POTENTIAL NOT FINISHED PRODUCTS. high school you’re learning- college you’re learning to get better! But hey, it’s a matter of opinion right????????

Over 4,000 yards and 50 td’s in just the last two seasons. IF he gets hurt every game how could he do this? One thing that I notice is that every time he gets the ball he tries as hard as he can to get every bit of yardage the he possibly can get. He twists, turns, hurdles and runs over and around defenders on a regular basis. He got hit lots this year. There was lots of penetration in the backfield which helped cause lots of the fumbles on the sweeps. His offensive line was inexpierenced this season. Imagine the numbers he would have put up had he played in Goddard or Hutch or down in 3 an 4A with GP and Andale.
[REPORT A VIOLATION]
October 29th, 2007 at 11:30 am
My point exactly. How can he get that many yards if he’s hurt? There is a reason that hurt was in parenthesis. He has the trainers come out ALL THE TIME. C’mon.
“…he tries as hard as he can to get every bit of yardage [that] he possibly can get.” If this is true, how do you explain Thursday night versus South? He twists, turns, and squirms to get free, cuts back across the field and then steps out of bounds before the sticks when he could’ve done what he’s coached to do and gotten the first down.
I’m not saying the kid has to be perfect, but there is really no toughness there.

In the last three years what do you think the % of carries that he had for East High? This year he carried the ball over 200 times on a team that didnt even throw the ball but around 80 times. Every defense knew that most of the time it was going to be a run to Bryce and the O line was only average this year if that. Bryce runs with lots of speed and power.

Ok BRYCE great runner OK vision and SPEED for WICHITA is GREAT had he grown up in Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, California, and TEXAS. DO you think he would be a Running back? I say No because just like Realitycheck said he lacks mental toughness. I play Runningback in D1 and I’m a total different back from him yet I can do the same things and also Lower my shoulder without a doubt to get a first down. Ive seen him play watched all of his games and I really wish he would have played back in the 03-04 season or 02-03 season where when on defense No matter who you were they came up and hit you…Take Raymond Mitchell in the 03-04 season for North high Mainly a power back had quick feet and good speed. 5′8 220 yet his vision compared to Bryce was better he gave 110% but back then he use to take big hits and dished them out even more Bryce has yet to run up on a Defense that wasnt scared of him because of his speed and size back in the 03-04 season the Defenses didnt care who you were Ask Anthony Bess Jeron Trotter O’dell Bell, Raymond Mitchell, Gary Chandler even ask Hieneker from Carrol Defenses then punished backs now they scared because of a name it s not the same I’m not saying he is not good and dont have Potential but I grew up on football and Ive seen and played a lot of ball and he is No 5 star as of yet I give him 4 but 5 star No And I’m Family to the guy and thats JUST REAL TALK

More like RealCrazyTalk. Records dont lie. All the TD’s and All the yards and the high average and success to a program that has been terrible for the last twenty years. Say what you want about the guy, but you cant deny the fact that every week, the oppisition knew exactly what to expect and at least 9 of the 11 guys played run. The guy still broke his own record. He has rushed for more yards than any of those guys you mentioned and he is only a junior. In some cases he has rushed for more yards than two of those combined. I think that you are jealous. You mentioned that you are a different style of RB. Well I think that you are jealous of him cause you think that if maybe if you didnt lack the skills that Bryce has then maybe you would be a big name back. AWWW. Im sorry buddy. People fail to realize that those D-1 coaches scout talent across the nation all year long. Thats what they do. Its no secret that they see Bryce as a top talent and would love to have him. Thats all that really matters. Not some opionion from a lack of limelight runningback like you. If you do play D1 why not just come out and say who you are. You are obviously and everyone knows you right? One more thing, you mentioned that in those other states that you dont see him playing RB but you give him 4 out of 5 stars? WHAAAT? I guess in those states only 5 star backs play right? That makes no sense at all.

I understand both sides of the story and I take no side I’ll state that yes the City league talent has been poor for a while and bryce did spark it up and I’m not gonna take anything from the guy he cool and is humble from when Ive last spoke to him so leave him alone let his game for the future speak for its self…but I am tired of hearing things like he did everything is self yes his speed did do alot but his line and WR did alot for him I mean EAST ONLY HAD 5 PLAYS that they Ran and he was 4 out of them 5 lol so I give him respect for being able to take the load of how many carries he did but believe it or not defenses arent as good as they was then I’m not saying he wouldnt have broken a 1000 but he was not as fast as O’dell Bell and defenses contained his speed and he had one of the best offensive lines in the state…Now jis potential will take him far and he will get better but let his time come before everybody trys to put him up on a pedastel or throw him under the bus
regaurdless I hope the best for him and want him to succeed in anywhere he goes be it here next yr or where ever so all I can say is if Bryce Reads this Stay low Run hard and watch for them guys that want you out cause they do come to get you I would know. Not much else tp say make it happen

I know who all those guys are you are talking about including yourself. I watched you play for the Tigers and upset the Dogs eighth grade season. I watched Bell for the Tigers and Bess for the Dogs go head to head. Ive watched city leauge football years before that even. Do you remember guys like Elias, or Costello Good, Brian Butler, Tyrone Phillips, Larry Star, Anthony Engram, Jeremy Benford, Jay Crabtree, Rashad Jackson, Larry Allen, Mario Ponds, Leon Edwards, Wendell Davis, Derrick Hubbard. These guys just to name a few were all good runners that I got a chance to see play and had they played today some of them probably would have gotten more D-1 attention. I graduated from North High so Ive also watched you play plenty of games and yes you do run very hard and have really good feet. I have also enjoyed watching Bryce play for the last three seasons and I am very impressed with the complete package at just 16. He has lots to learn but thats what the coaches and camps are for. I dont care where in this country you put him, he would still be a star. You have to remember that in some of those states that you mentioned, he would also be playing along side of better players. Just remember something, the head coaches from the top notch D-1 programs love what they see in Bryce and Im sure they know more than all the people who come on these discussion boards to downtalk his game. Im glad you have accomplishe what you have but now I do question your character and your motives to say the things you have said. I pull for all of our kids here and wish them the best.

I agree with you. The city was lots tougher then and also in the 90’s we had a few teams that played for state championships. I think that we have a problem here with some of our talented kids not even going out for football for a variety of reasons. Would Bryce run for all the yards that he has in the last three seasons had he been playing 5 plus years ago? Well to tell you the truth, Ive havnt seen anything convincing enough for me to say that he wouldnt. From what I see, Bryce is a hardworking kid. He works during the off season while lots of other kids are chilling and smoking drinking and things of that nature. When you put God given talent with good work ethics its hard for a person to fail. We all know that if he keeps working that the sky is the limit. I go to youtube and watch some of the great backs in college and in the pros today and the one thing that I notice is obviously how much better they have gotten. Im excited for all of our players in the city that take football serious and work hard to succeed at it. Im also glad to hear that while facing adversity that you are still striving towards your goals. I wish you the best with your football carrer and any other things that you choose to do in life and God bless you.
