Playoff bound?
Oct. 24, 2007 @ 2:16 p.m. byThis is always one of the best weeks of the football season. It’s also one of the most confusing two days of the season. Every team will be trying to win their last regular-season games, and many of them also will be paying attention to what’s going on at other games.
Some teams won’t know if they’ve reached the playoffs until they find out the score from another game in their district.
That means a lot of phone calls and a whole lot of tension.
Take a look into any press box on Thursday or Friday night, and you’ll probably see at least one person on the phone. Chances are, they’re not ordering a pizza.
The Kansas high school football district plan is far from perfect, but this part is actually pretty interesting.

Far from perfect? You’re being mighty kind. Pathetic is a better word, but I can’t really say how I feel on these boards.

With two teams moving on from each district, I can’t see how people can complain.
I actually found the previous system more exciting, when just one team moved on.

I think they should use a new system. Make the whole season worth watching. Not the last 3 games…

But if you do that, nobody will schedule tough non-league games.
It’s all about who is No. 1, and it’s extremely rare in high school that when all is said and done that two of the best teams don’t meet in the title game.

just did the math on the 8 Man thru 4A brackets… 28% of the 4A teams have a losing record… that is 9 of 32 (5@4-5, 3@3-6, 1@2-7)… how many teams in 4A had a winning record and did not make it I am not sure… but this is terrible. In 2-1A there are 4 teams in the play-offs with a 2-7 record….Congrates to those that made the system work for them… and too bad a sensable system could not be used to reward those teams who played the season in their own class and won the majority of those games. Something NEEDS to be done…

Maybe they should put a qualifier in the district format that says IN ADDITION to winning your distric a team MUST have a winning record to advance to the Play-offs… That would allow the district format, which I think has its benifits, yet allow “at-large” winning teams to still compete in the play-offs. This coupled with requiring only “same class” games to be counted for the “winning record” and a minimum number of those…. say 7….
