Once again, working to make this blog interactive, here’s some comments from you, our faithful readers.

From Overrated, regarding Bryce Brown’s 5-star rating by Scout.com:

This is the same website that ranked notre dame’s last two recruiting classes as top 10 classes..we see how good they are. Brown is a d1 player and a good player but he’s not great. I’ve seen better backs in high school.

You say, “I’ve seen better backs in high school.” My question is where? Are you talking out of state, out of the area, where? Because in my 12 seasons of covering high school football here, he’s definitely one of the best I’ve seen. Darren Sproles is obviously one of the best backs I’ve seen in Kansas, Jake Sharp, too. Brown is up there. Does he fumble too much? Yep, but he’ll fix this. This kid has speed and he’s got great vision and is physical.

From Jack:

“State cross country is this weekend… “

You’re right. We’ll be covering all six classes. Check out Friday’s paper for a preview and Sunday’s paper for all the coverage.

From Billy BOB regarding the Can’t-miss events:

“It is Mac at Hays. Oh yeah and if it were basketball season you would have moved us up to number one after beating the number one team.”

Thanks for the correction, Billy BOB. Gentle reminder (since I’ve covered this topic before in an earlier post): Rankings are subjective, merely a talking point as they don’t affect anything such as seeding. But glad to know that they’re still a topic of conversation.

Regarding Garden Plain vs. Hesston blog: I think I need to write about these teams more often. Man, the number of hits and comments is excellent.

One point to make to Pronk, who wrote “I wont take anything away from Smith Center’s talent. Just keep it amoungst yourselves and keep playing in your small class.” From me — It was only in the past decade that Garden Plain moved up from Class 2-1A to 3A.

In an aside to the poster (Catfan 1971) talking about Houlik who redshirted. I’m pretty sure, Pronk, that he means John Houlik, who’s having an excellent season for the Wildcats. He’s Joseph’s brother.

Keep the comments coming, and remember, I’m always looking for interesting topics, so e-mail me at joanna@varsitykansas.com or comment on one of the blog posts.

Don’t look at Scout.com. They think Arthur Brown is the best recruit in the nation. Just wait for Rivals. They will be more realistic. But he’ll probably still be a 5 star.

Glad to hear cross country will get a little something in the paper. With how much effort they put it, they deserve it.

Actually, Garden Plain moved up to 3A the same time that Smith Center moved down to 2-1A. Fall 2004 was the first year for each school in their respective classification.

Interesting enough, making it to the 2-1A State Finals out of the West has been a challenge for almost the past 20+ years. Only 6 schools can make that claim since 1984 and only 3 since 1996!

    Victoria-1985, 1988
    Stockton-1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995
    Atwood-1989, 1990, 1991
    Garden Plain-1996, 2003
    Claflin-1984, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
    Smith Center-2004, 2005, 2006

It’s amazing the run that some schools get on and the success that they have year-in and year-out. It just shows how great of an impact tradition can have on a program. Most of these schools have also had success at different classifications as well. It has not mattered whether they have moved up or moved down; they still are just as competitive.

Where do you get all your information? And who seriously keeps track of that kind of stuff? You should work for ESPN, and be the guy that finds the most pointless stats ever.

Actually, I’ve been told that a lot. However, I don’t necessarily remember all of that. I just know where to go to find it. You can find A LOT of info about Kansas High School sports at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame website, http://www.kshof.org. It lists all champions and record holders for every sport. Also, they have a lot of other information you can get if you just email them or call them. Pretty much if it happened in Kansas High School sports and someone reported it, they have the information.
