Has Marky Nolen been discovered?

Oct. 26, 2007 @ 5:36 p.m. by Joanna

When Tony Johnson took over as South’s football coach in the offseason, he discovered that Marky Nolen was a special athlete. Over the past month, Johnson busily worked to get Nolen the Division I recognition he thinks the senior deserves. Now it looks like that time has come.

Johnson said today that in the past week, he’s heard from Oklahoma, K-State, Miami and  LSU. All are expressing interest in Nolen, a wide receiver/defensive end.

“I sent so much tape last month, I knew eventually someone would notice he’s a great player” Johnson said. “He’s raw. He’s never lifted weights… he’s so naturally strong and talented that if he is redshirted, he could be a force.”

Nolen still must qualify — he takes the ACT on Saturday and must pass two core classes in the spring to be Division I qualified.

I know Tony and one thing he will do is put in the work to help a kid get to the next level.

Marky has always been a very talented football player, every since 3rd grade with the Wichita Tigers. He is a play maker! I think it’s great the new football coach recognizes that in him, and is helping him get the recognition he deserves. I couldn’t believe that Milleson didn’t recognize his talent or try to utilize him, he just wasted his talent, in my opinion. I think he just didn’t like Marky for whatever reason, but he must not have tried to get to know him, because he is a very nice young man. He is also a very good basketball player too. Good luck to you Marky!!!

Good football player, but probably the worst attitude i’ve ever seen. I’ve seen him get kicked out of 2 basketball games and 1 football game

  4. Fan says:

That is exactly why D1 coaches don’t come to Wichita more often. They don’t want to waist their time on recruiting an athlete that is not eligible to attend a D1 college.

  5. Austin says:

about getting kicked out of the game. i dont know about the basketball game. But The 1 football game the player from KMC called him a… well he used a racial slur that i dont thikn was proper. You can use your imagination to fill in the word but marky got kicked out cause he retaliated and the other kid didnt even get a flag

  6. lifer says:

Marky is a young man who just needed someone to believe in him and belittle him like the previous coach. Johnson has held him accountable and at the same time let him know that he cares about him and that he really believes in him. I don’t know about worst attitude but he is doing better than last year and that is due to the coaches. Marky has talent but he is just now getting around to the mental side of things. A good basketball player but his future should be in football. If he goes to juco we will hear about him at the d1 level in a few years. Juco may be good for him to allow him more time to mature.

  7. lifer says:

that should say “not” belittle him.

  8. Insideinfo says:

Makry is a great competitor. He would have dominated as either a TE/WR or DE if he wasn’t going both ways. The kid never left the field and still performed well. He frequently ran down Kale Pick from the back side and was a ball hawk all year on defense. I’m not sure if he played football his freshman year, but I know he didn’t even play his sophmore year. His junior year he was kept off of offense because the HC didn’t believe he could do it even though he was a beast on O in practice. I can only imagine what he could be if he had played four years with good coaching.
He has a great attitude, but plays with fire. During the football game he was removed he was frequently held and hit with cheap shots that weren’t called. He plays with fire and got tired of being hit in the back and after the whislte and got even more angry. That anger is something good players have! He lost it, but it had nothing to do with attitude.
In college marky will hit the weights, have good coaching and be a force in whatever position he plays.

Anybody know his measurables? Ht/Wt/40 time/etc

  10. Austin says:

I wanna say he is 6′3” 240 but thats just a ballpark and yes inside info is right. On scout O last year as a running back he could not be stopped against Souths Starting D which included Saftey TJ Shine

  11. lifer says:

I don’t understand these coaches that hold things against kids. Why would they not play him on Offense if it helped the team. Same thing at was going on goddard with the ethridge kid.

  12. Austin says:

Not all the South high coaches were against Marky being on O. A few expressed intrest in him as a WR last year

  13. Jack says:

As a senior on last years team, I can say without a doubt that Marky had poor practice habits, and that is what kept him from playing. He tried to not practice until thursday, and then coach wouldnt play him–call it belittling if you want. I call if fair. He was also indefinitely suspended because of his attitude.

He did not play his junior year–contrary to what insideinfo says.

Good luck Marky–if you make it D1 congrats. For all you others, get off of coach and move on.

  14. response says:

Lifer, I agree with what you said about these coaches holding grudges. You are sure right about what went/is going on in Goddard with the ethridge kid. How do you go from being a 2nd team all city running back to not even touching the ball on offense. I know the Goddard coach was pretty ticked at him for transferring to NW his junior year but that is a personal issue. It should not be reflected on the field.

The Goddard offense could really use him this week against NW. He knows that team after playing with them and I’m sure he could make a difference on the offensive side of the ball just as well as the defensive side.

I think the Wichita area should have a lot more kids going D1. Like that coach said, he sent out lots of film and he knew someone would see him. How many other coaches are doing that same thing for their kids. I hear that there are some coaches that are actually holding letters of interest back from their team. (They don’t want to get them distracted!)

  15. insideinfo says:

Jack is completely wrong. First he refers to what happened last year even though he stated Marky didn’t play last year. Second the only thing that kept him from playing time on D last year was a sore ankle. His attitude in practice is what got him playing time even though he was slowed by his ankle. His attitude was a good thing. He wants to win. Jack has no clue of what he is talking about.

  16. Austin says:

insideinfo you are right but Marky did have bad practice habits. He played all of last year. I cant remember when he didnt play. If i remember he even played a little Linebacker one game
