Another rematch

Nov. 12, 2007 @ 3:40 p.m. by

Friday’s state football semifinals are loaded with rematches. Some from earlier this season and some from the 2006 playoffs. Just take a look at all of them:

6A: Goddard at Hutchinson (Hutch won the first meeting 21-7); Olathe South at Olathe North (North won 24-20).

5A: Salina Central at Bishop Carroll (Carroll won last season’s playoff game 35-13)

4A: Ulysses at Andale (Andale won last year’s playoff 20-14).

3A: Garden Plain at Conway Springs (Garden Plain won 35-6); Silver Lake at Rossville (Silver Lake won 46-6).

2-1A: St. Francis at Smith Center (Smith Center won last year’s playoff 6-2); St. Marys at Pittstburg Colgan (St. Marys won last year’s playoff 22-15).

So will most of these rematches turn out the say way? Probably so, but there will be some interesting games.

Goddard gave Hutchinson one of its best games of the season. Bishop Carroll needs a victory to reach its first 5A final in 29 years. And the Ulysses-Andale games have been some of the state’s best playoff games each of the past two years.

The game that really interests me, though, is the Smith Center game. One more shutout and the Redmen set the state record with 12.

My prediction: Smith Center gets the record, but then it gets scored on in the 2-1A championship.

Goddard had multiple chances against Hutchinson last time in the redzone.

If Goddard can make the most of every redzone opportunity then I believe Goddard can snap Hutchinson’s 34 game win streak!

  2. playoffexperience says:

Don’t forget that Hutch missed some red zone chances as well

  3. jayhawkfan says:

Goddard has a lot of momentum lately. I believe that their game on Saturday will be a tight one. If they can catch better than the last time they played Hutch I believe they will pull the upset!

  4. vinceyoung says:

Goddard used up all their luck they had left against Junction. Hutch makes sure everyone knows how much better they are than Goddard and beats them 35-7. I think people forget that Mac actually gave Hutch their best game of the season. Goddard coaches are too cocky and dreiling will want to knock them down. Next year Hutch wins by 50 against Goddard.

  5. playoffexperience says:

I believe Hutch has much more momentum. They only beat Garden 21-0 and Hutch blew them out. They squeaked out a victory against Dodge. Now, I realize that the QB for Dodge was back but he doesn’t play defense. So Goddard only manage 15 against Dodge while Hutch was up 41-0 when they took the starters out. If that is momentum for Goddard then what’s that for Hutch?

  6. playoffexperience says:

Sorry VYoung, although you root for Hutch I have to disagree w/ you. Goddard coaches aren’t cocky. They are a quality staff and that reflects their recent surge in football in the last couple of years. At this point in the playoffs it’s not really about luck. Goddard put themselves in the position to win that game and they did. That’s not luck, that’s a culmination of the things the coaches have instilled all year.

  7. SCfan says:

Salina Central seniors are out for revenge. I see Central coming out ahead and headed for Emporia. GO MUSTANGS!!!!

  8. Owl Fan says:

We’ve beat them once this year on their turf and we can do it again! State here we come!

  9. GP SMASHES CONWAY says:

LMAO… Conway Springs will get blown out by 30….. Guarenteed…. Our team is soooooo pissssed at them for attending our games and cheering and encouraging Hesston and hoisington when they traveled to GP. I guess I couldn’t blame them, who would want to play us…..

Conways run as a powerhouse in football ended two years ago, hmmm who snapped their streak anyway… oh yeah, GP….

same result this game as the last three… a big GP win!

    See ya at State……..

  10. Randy Dreiling says:

Hutchinson will lose to Goddard! HOOD FIGGA!

  11. Ranking 3A Football says:

Bluestem has the best program in 3A….. band program that is…….

    1.Garden Plain
    Silver Lake
    Hesston
    Hoisington
    Conway Springs

  12. OhMyGoddardFan says:

Goddard has AMAZING coaches who have yet to say anything negative about any other team. We are moving forward with our goal of winning a state championship. We have great players who are ready to do what they do best on Friday night, play football. Both teams have great mentality and I honestly believe Goddard can give Hutch a run this time….looking above I guess I’m not the only one who thinks that :) GO LIONS!!
P.S. - looks like Garden Plain just took over #1.
When was the last time Goddard has gone this far? So dont say we are talking trash all the time. This is the one shot we get to say anything positive about our team. Give us our time. Hutch gets to talk smack every year and I assure you its getting old.

  13. EAGLENATOR says:

    MAIZE 36 GODDARD 35 2 OT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    OH MY GODDARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. KSHAA President 10 says:

I have to say that i am completely embarrassed that Goddard even has the chance to play Hutch. After watching the game tape from last Fridays game, Junction City and Goddard, I am said to say that Goddard doesn’t even deserve to be in the semi-finals. Yes, sure, a win is a win, and at the end of the game the score showed Goddard winning. But anyone who was at the game, watched the game, or played in the game knows that it was the most horrible officiating ever. I am extremely embarrassed by the way my staff conducted the game, and shocked by how lopsided it was for Goddard. It is ashame there aren’t challenges in High School football because everyone knows that Ryan Smith fumbled, everyone knows that the officials spotted Goddard and extra yard on each play, and everyone knows that the officials should explains themselves. It’s a terrible thing to happen to such a talented team in Junction City. I’m sure that most of the state would definitely see Junction City vs Hutchinson then Goddard. I apologize Junction City for the officiating, you boys had a great run and deserve at least one more week of play and a crack at Hutch. In all fairness though, good luck Goddard and take out Hutch. Wish I had another chance!
P.S.–Junction City Blue Jays - 9-2 - Centennial League Champs - Regional Champs - Sub-State Runner Up - Silver Trophy - One Hell of a year fellas!

  15. EAGLENATOR says:

You need to remember Rule 52; KSHSAA president 10! Respect ALL decisions made by the officials! LOL!!!!!!!!!

    HOOD FIGGA!!!

  16. MOTHERship says:

I don’t think the Conway people were rooting for Hesston or Hoisington - Conway and GP get along a lot better than GP and Cheney. Here’s to a good clean game with no injuries.

  17. Crusher says:

In response to the KSHAA President. I don’t remember to many penalities for either team. The Junction City coach made some bad calls but not the refs. Goddard had the ball the whole 3rd qaurter except for 4-plays. If Goddard can control the ball and score in the red zone they will beat Hutch. Hutchinson is also lucky they didn’t have to come to Goddard. Goddard sells out every game. They have the best fans in the state.

As for the Eaglenator. Your school (Maize) is one of the largest in the state with medicore results in all sports. Maybe you should help them find better coaches. How many points did Hutch score? 76. How many did Northwest score? 56. Wow, that’s embarassing.

  18. Concerned Fan says:

Just a quick question. Do the officials ref with different officials each week or is it like the same officials refing with each other each week?

  19. I know how you feel says:

lets hope they switch the officials up because if the hutch vs goddard game has the same officials as the junction city vs goddard game, then hutch stands no chance because the refs will do hutch the same way they did junction city and favor goddard

  20. brooke says:

i think that conway springs has the potential to beat garden plain, but i think that they will continue to kind of give up in the second half, or to do the same thing, play after play after play.

  21. Crusher says:

I apologize EAGLENATOR for my illogical comments about Maize. Every school has a rebuilding year and Goddard will most likely have one next season with them losing 25+ Seniors!

  22. Marlin says:

Hey GP, when you match Conway in Championships, then start your crowing, or hooting. They had a stud, Seiwert that won 4 State Championships, your stud hasn’t managed one yet.

  23. OhMyGoddardFan says:

Wow by the way, we had a really bad week with the team before the maize game. They were not working together and an emergency meeting was held to discuss some player issues. If we were to do it again now we would blow your butts out of the water. You can say you won all you want but where did it take you? To an inahilation by Hutch. We lost by 14. Suck on that. If i hear “bad refs” one more time i’m gonna kill someone. Stop being bad sports JC and LET IT GO. Seriously you lost and went home give it up you cant go back and win it so stop trying. So president whatever, shut up. And on top of that, it didnt take only winning to JC to get us where we are. We have only lost 2 games all season so dont act like we have got in by a miriacle becuase that’s bull crap. We have a great team this year.

  24. Crusher says:

Crusher did not apologize to EAGLENATOR for my comments. Maize kids are spoiled rich kids. The parents run the sports and run it into the ground. It’s no wonder you have use my name to make an apology. Most likely some rich parent trying to control things. Goddard’s Freshmen, Sophomore & JV teams did very well and they will not rebuild they will reload and kick the Maize Eaglets @#%# next year. We may have 25 senoirs but that’s more than your whole football team. The Maize job was so bad one coach quit before he had one practice.
Go Lions beat Hutch. Maize enjoy your vacation.

  25. playoffexperience says:

“Concerned Fan” The same officials ref w/ each other each week. “Crews” are assigned to different games each week rather than individual officials assigned to different games each week.

As for it making a difference if Hutch travels, it really doesn’t make a difference. This is the only the second home sub-state game Hutch has had in the 7 sub-state games Hutch has played since 2000. Last year was the first, and this is the second. So, that means in ‘03, ‘04, ‘05 Hutch traveled for sub-state and won. For you Goddard “newbies” in the sub-state games; Every sub-state game is amazingly packed and yes, sold out. So to say Hutch is lucky really has no backing.
    sorry to disappoint!

  26. OhMyGoddardFan says:

wow another “salt hawk fan”….you’re cool. Gots to go with Crusher on this one. Lions lets win State!!

  27. playoffexperience says:

Yep, I’m cool because I have proved wrong everything you’ve said. Sorry dude, I know what I’m talking about. I have….playoff experience

  28. vinceyoung says:

Yeah it is good thing this game isn’t at Goddard. I mean last time the game was played there it was close wasn’t it? 35-0 at halftime? One good year and Goddard is a “powerhouse”. Next year you will be Hutch’s first Maize game score.

  29. Randy Dreiling says:

Hutchinson’s football team has no class! Example: Maize vs Hutch 06:

Hutchinson’s Trinidad Duarte goes helmet to knee to Maize back-up QB Chad Relihan AFTER THE PLAY WAS OVER! Then he tried to play if off like it was an accident! (Relihan tore his ACL because of this)

The only thing taught at Hutch is winning championships nothing about class or dignity.

  30. playoffexperience says:

you have no idea what you’re talking about! above all they teach class and dignity. I could name 10 late hits committed by Maize in Hutch v Maize games!!! The fact is, naming one hit and saying that Hutch doesn’t have class or dignity is dumb. Get real dude. OH, and I’ve already reported your racial comments to the wichita eagle. The comment you made about Romero Cotton and his last name is a discrace. So, to even talk about class and dignity when you clearly have none is again, dumb.

  31. playoffexperience says:

I still can’t believe someone would say such a thing! Romero Cotton is a incredible athlete! I’m still confused on why Randy Dreiling would say such things about his own team! Wow, people are ignorant.

  32. playoffexperience says:

to the remark made above. since you can obviously put any name in, i.e. you put playoffexperiene in, posing as me, Sean. then that means anyone can put any name, and did. randy dreiling did obviously did not say those things. Does anybody really think the head coach at hutch put these things about his own team? c’mon ppl

  33. Dillon Cott says:

Yeah, People are stupid. Goddard is awesome. 9-2. We is gonna beat da Salthawks!

  34. no lies says:

all hutch has to do is stop goddards run game and they will win. Logan watkins couldnt pass if his life depended on it. i came to the game early n saw him warming up and throwing in some workout clothes. Turns out he was 2-8 on his passes. Thats a 38% completion rating. And with only 8 passes on the night you know he will run the ball when the play is supposed to a passing one. Hutch will win again just like they did earlier in the year but by a bigger margin. As for the east side 6A i hope they one of the two teams can win the state championship like they used to in the late 90’s and early 00’s.

  35. Mark says:

Why does the Eagle let people make up fake names like “KSHSAA President” and keep their posts on the message board? Just about everyone knows that post was by some sore loser pretending to be someone he is not. Whining about officials is the copout of a loser. The message board should be monitored and that sort of thing deleted. Inventing neutral names is OK; making up recognizable names or identifications should be grounds for barring people from this forum.

  36. High school sports fan says:

WOW!! You all are brutal. Goddard will reload next year. They lost one JV game to Hutch with 8 starters watching from the side line. Injured or moved up to Varsity. Hutch played Hella players from friday nights game. Goddard has 27 Juniors foaming at the mouth to take the place of a senior next year, and 28 sophmores doing the same behind them. Goddard has been rebuilding for years it just took awhile for Coach Robben to undo all that Coach Davis screwed up.
He has taught them class as well as football. As Dreiling has his team.
Just remember to all you Hutch and Goddard Fans, Smack talking gets you no where ask Northwest. (Oh and thanks to the Northwest person who put birdseed on the bleachers, it worked every inch of the bleachers was covered in bird poop, we may have had to stand but it was worth the win) Oh and as far as the officiating at the JC Goddard game Wow the view from the visiting side must be blurred, we will have to fix that. The ball spotting was horrible for both sides, one play while one ref was getting the chains, the ref by the ball picked it up and moved it forward 5 inches giving JC the first down. one spot that JC got was 8 yards beyond where the kid went out of bounds. I know there are alot of examples for both teams but the game is over. NOW it is time to look past it.
It should be a good game Friday night. Goddard knows it and Hutch knows it. You don not have to be a imposter on this forum no one will know it is you anyway. See all you posers at the game. WIN OR LOSE

  37. Roger Robben says:

Goddard will dominate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hutchinson’s run ends here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It won’t be close at all!!!!!!!

  38. High school sports fan says:

Well whether you are 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A…………today is the big day. It is win or go home. As most people are getting up and following a normal daily routine. Our players are following a dream, a dream to finially prove something to everyone with a state championship. As a mom we follow the Friday routine. Putting on our clothing and jewelry, spirit buttons and etc., the same exact way as we did it last friday and the friday before of course. As the day goes the butterflies build in our stomachs, worried not only that we win but that our sons stay safe a no one gets hurt. But when game time rolls around the one thing we moms want to say is, Go do you best, play with heart, passion and intensity. But most of all WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck to everyone tonight, may the best teams advance.
    GO GODDARD!!!!!! WE BELIEVE!!!!!!

  39. GO GP STATE says:

Funny, i thought this was a team sport…. Goddard will lose by 4… Garden Plain will win by 41….. Andale wins by 5…. just ask my crystal balls…….

Conway sucks and has BARELY beaten teams to get this fars. Stick a big fork in em’ They are Done! Go back and rehire that coach that someone paid 50 bucks more a year to leave your arses!

  40. Crusher says:

    Bishop Carroll 28-Salina Central 7
    Goddard 20- Hutchinson 17
    Andale 34-Ulysses-8

  41. vinceyoung says:

    55-21 hutch. Nice season Goddard

  42. jew says:

    actually it was 55-28 hutch.

  43. wildcat says:

    Dillon Cott……Who is stupid now?

  44. wildcat says:

Roger Robbin……….Missed again. Goddard got pounded, but if you are gonna dream, dream big…..

  45. BIG BOY says:

who will be going to the state championship game on saturday at 1 at yager stadium in topeka?

  46. EAGLENATOR says:

If Goddard were to play us again they would totally crush us. We were sooooo lucky they had problems that week which caused them to lose focus. They are soo much bigger and better and we all know it!

  47. Gage McKinnis says:

Goddard’s problems that week? Let’s see: BJ Etheridge being a complete and arrogant prick to Goddard’s coaching staff.

Black kid thinks he can get a free ride to do or say whatever he wants just because his “Brothas” have been fighting the struggle for 400 years!
