Brett Steven
Nov. 19, 2007 @ 3:26 p.m. by Jeff LutzBrett is the latest in that athletically gifted, Spangles-loving Steven family, which has provided the City League with standout athletes for more than a decade. The group includes Taylor Steven, now playing women’s basketball for Wichita State, and multi-time state tennis champ Corey.
Brett is following in the footsteps of older brother Craig, once a standout quarterback with Bishop Carroll. But Brett has a chance to do something Craig — or any Golden Eagles quarterback in almost 30 years — never did, and that’s win a state championship.
I don’t know much about Blue Valley West, but after seeing Carroll play on Friday, I know they’ll be tough to beat. Aside from the annually powerful defense, Steven is a big reason for their success. I relate him to Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing, because neither make mistakes and both manage a game incredibly well.
As a quarterback, being called a good game manager is somewhat of a backhanded compliment. But in Steven’s case, it’s the highest compliment. He does whatever the Eagles and coach Alan Schuckman need — he can move the chains with short passes or look for a big play down field. He hasn’t thrown an interception all season and hits his receivers in stride right in the hands. Like Reesing, Steven can do it all but never tries to do too much.
This is a golden — no pun intended — opportunity for the Eagles. They haven’t won a title since 1978 and winning in 5A after this season will be incredibly difficult because Hutchinson drops from 6A for 2008. But I think this is their year. I had bad luck blogging about quarterbacks when Logan Watkins and Goddard lost to Hutch on Friday, but I think Steven makes me look good with the City League’s first football title since 1987.

hmmmmm…. craig sucked at WSU as a basketball player.. what was his average 2.1 pts a game…. And is a terrible announcer…..
His little bro is a stud though….. he should win state and go on to a D1 and start as a Jr.

Aside from the fact that he can’t scramble to save his life and occasionally misses key reads he is having a really good year. Thankfully there are ten other players out there on the field with Brett.
Not “he” alone, but Carroll should have a good shot at the state title, we will be cheering for you.
GO CARROLL!!!!!

Too slow but some how gets yards, I’m still trying to figure that one out, good line helps him a bunch. I think he’s a good player and is better at basketball but can play both but I don’t see D-1 in the future.

You obviously never seen Craig play football. He was really good. Had he played in the CL today he would be reguarded as one of the best players. His senior season, BC may have had their best team ever. They however were beat by a Liberal team that was dominant at that time. They lost on a last second hail mary play.

Cant scramble for his life? have you seen this kid play?

His brother craig did other things rather than score for Wichita State some people do not realize that! To say he is a horrible announcer? you have problems.. and by the way he was an all city all state Quarterback for carroll and probably would have done well in college if he chose to play football

Brett would be ripped in two if he tried to play D1 football.

Don’t some of you have anything better to do than post negative comments on what is a positive story about a very good player? This kid has done nothing but score, lead drives, lead the team, and win.

Yes…everybody please believe Point. Or else you don’t have anything better to do so don’t post. Get over it… some people don’t like Brett, its sports, it happens.

What a JOKE! Well, he will play D1 if his family donates the money like they did to WSU to get Craig time on the court
November 21st, 2007 at 3:34 pm
D1…..get a grip, he won’t even get a D2 look. Cameron Kasel (Heights) was a far better QB but was only able to get an offer from Washburn….get real Eagle Dude

Just because the family has some money you think thats why they get playing time.. give the athlete some credit

tnioP - sorry your team didn’t make it as far as Brett’s team. You sound like a sore “loser.”
November 22nd, 2007 at 6:35 pm
boosters get what they want…….. history speaks for itself.. he is a solid athlete, but they have better qb options….
November 22nd, 2007 at 7:23 pm
and who might their “better ” QB options be?
November 24th, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Guess we’ll never know.. Spoiled rich kids…. Good for the coaches to spank their botoms accordingly. Daddy hosta a party… nice….. they deserve what they got!
nOW STEVEN’S CAN GO ON AND PUT HIMSELF ABOVE WHATEVER TEAM HE WILL PLAY FOR NEXT…..
Too bad for the other 60 kids that poured out their hearts for this…

“they deserve what they got?”
I don’t know Brett Steven but State Runner Up is not too shabby. Good job Brett.

He may be alright for the city league, but the Macari kid from Andale is good!!!! He passes (2000 yds, 25 tds) runs, plays safety on D, and kicks (kickoffs, pats, fg).

Macari may be alright for their league.
