If I made the basketball schedule . . .

Dec. 6, 2007 @ 9:55 p.m. by Kirk Seminoff

Gotta admit, I love the concept behind the conference-vs.-conference series that seem to dominate college basketball these days. It started with The Big East vs. ACC, then the Big Ten filled in for the Big East (and seemingly never bests the ACC), and now the other four BCS conferences are doing it (SEC vs. Big East, Big 12 vs. Pac-10).

It got me thinking: Wouldn’t it be great to have a City League vs. AV-CTL challenge? I haven’t worked through the details of finding space in the schedule for this extra game, though for most every school it wouldn’t be all that difficult. But think about these matchups:

Maize vs. Northwest — Imagine the smack talk across 21st Street on game day.

Derby vs. Southeast — A once-great football rivalry goes indoors.

Valley Center vs. Heights — Winner take all . . . of Park City.

Andover (or Central) vs. Kapaun Mount Carmel — We’re pretty sure this would get some backyard blood boiling.

Campus vs. South — We’d get Ron Meyer and Ricky Ross to be honorary captains.

Goddard vs. Bishop Carroll — Another west-side story waiting to happen.

Hutchinson vs. East — Two traditional basketball powers (who already meet almost yearly).

McPherson vs. North — Matchup of two of the state’s best gymnasiums.

Newton vs. West — Why? Because Mike Bonczyk coached at both places.

This challenge is sort of already happening:
    North 53 @ Salina Central 77 12/4/07
    East @ Hutch 12/7/07
    Southeast @ Derby 12/7/07
    Campus @ South 12/8/07
    West @ Andover 12/11/07
    Goddard @ Carroll 1/29/08
    Northwest @ Maize 2/2/08

That is all I have compiled of GWAL vs. AVCTL this season not counting tournament match-ups or potential tournament match-ups

Or… how about a battle of the two city league’s in Kansas, GWAL vs. Centennial. This could provide some very interesting matchups but, travel would be difficult so maybe a nuetral site. This could take place on a Friday and Saturday at a nuetral site games taking place all day Friday and Saturday.

Yeah… Wichita City league vs the Centennial… The Topeka schools wouldn’t want to be embarrassed that badly, though…
Let’s just bring back Grand State now that we have 6 classes… it didn’t do so well when we had 5… (unless you were a wrestler…) Now that would be fun… all 6 class champs… one tourney… winner is the best in Kansas… put names in a hat so the pairings are not biased… let them rock out…

I agree sgt steve. Do it one week after the state tourney and put it in Koch Arena. That would be awesome.

I like the idea of a grand state. But let’s have the four smallest schools play the pig-tail games with Class 5A and 6A getting a bye. Then let the tournament play out. That way this gives 1A state champ a chance at glory instead of automatically facing a 6A school right off the bat. I just don’t think the 1A champ can compete with the 6A team. But I could be wrong.

Yea, if they did Grand State, it should be 1a winner v.s 2a winner. 3a v.s 4a. and then the winners of those games play, and the winner plays the winner of 5a v.s 6a

some schools try to do what you are talking about. I go to collegiate and our coach scheduals us harder games or “rivalry” games. We have been playing kapaun and andover for awhile now as a “rivalry” which is always a packed gym. Last year was our last year that they let us play in the mcpherson tournament where there we were the lowest class ranked team at 3a (last year we didnt do any good but years befor we have almost won). The mcpherson tournament kicked us out because of the years before when we have almost won. This year is our last year to play kapaun and andover because they both dropped us for next year. for andover it doesnt look good getting beat by a 3a school. and for kapaun it doesnt look good having a “close” or competitive game with a 3a school. so most big (6a or 5a) schools dont schedual games with smaller schools because it doesnt look good if they loose, althought the rivalry is fun. i also like the idea of a grand state but it would be very tought for a 1a school to compete.

Fiegel wants games with bigger schools, should schedule Southwest Preparatory Conference schools in Oklahoma to renew really old rivalries.
