Blizzard conditions

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Count on seeing angry comments from parents regarding Wichita area school districts canceling school today. I understand their point, but when I got the call at 5:30 this morning, it was crazy outside. The snow was heavy and you knew the morning commute would be brutal. Who knew that now, at 1:10 p.m., that it would be 70 degrees and sunny?

But there have been postponements, which is how this is a sports-related thing. Andover’s postponed its wresting, and Andover Central has postponed its wrestling with Andale and bowling, as well. Campus at Newton bowing is ppd.

The City League hasn’t decided yet.

Any more out there? Let us know!

Joanna vs. Jeff Top 5 Chat: Favorite Coaches

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

JL: I’m a little hurt, if not totally angry, that you stole my “Top 5″ idea and used it on your favorite venues. I thought we agreed yesterday that we would do a dueling “Top 5″ on our favorite coaches to interview and cover. Way to steal my thunder and my fans, too.

JC: Get over it, Jeff. Quit whining. Feel free to blog as much as I do.
What’s our top five topic going to be today? Let’s do the five favorite coaches to interview. Wait a second, is this all-time or current coaches?

JL: This is all-time. I realize you will have a much larger frame of reference since you’ve been doing this twice as long as me, but I feel like my list can be just as interesting and thought-provoking. I mean, I’ve met a lot of characters in six years.

JC: Fine, so I’m old. Get over that, too, young ‘un. All right my No. 1 is Dale Faber, who coached at Bishop Carroll and was excellent. He was hilarious, win or lose. But the best quote he ever gave me actually got him in trouble. It came after a particularly ugly loss. I asked him about how ugly it was. He said, “It was uglier than watching Roseanne Barr and I play one-on-one naked.” He had a funny comment about every situation and it was tough to listen to him when he was actually serious because you were waiting for the punch line.

JL: I missed the Dale Faber days at Bishop Carroll unfortunately, but I’ve dealt with him a little bit now that he’s the men’s basketball coach at Friends. As for my No. 1, I’m going with Ronnie Allen, the boys basketball coach at East. I don’t know if I have a particularly good reason, but there’s just something about the guy that puts me at ease when I’m talking to him. Even though he calls me “Lutz” and I don’t think he knows my first name, we’ve developed a good rapport over the years. I try to make him laugh sometimes, and I’m successful about two times out of 10.

My second choice, someone who could have easily been No. 1, is Bobby Bribiesca, the soccer coach at Northwest. Even though soccer isn’t completely on my radar as a sports fan, I haven’t dealt with a coach during my time at The Eagle who is as passionate about his sport as Bribiesca, one of the original City League soccer coaches. He makes me wish I knew more about soccer, because I think it would be fun to shoot the breeze with him and I know he talks about the game a lot. He’s probably the most consistently nice person I’ve met on this job — he never has a negative comment, never raises his voice and never shows even an ounce of bitterness or anger over a loss.

JC: These are so thought-provoking. But I thought we were only doing basketball coaches, Jeff. Now I’ve got to think even harder. Thanks a lot.

I like Ron Allen, too, because he always has something smart alecky to say to me. I think he knows my first name, though. And Bobby B., what a great guy, especially because he’s always available.

My No. 2 would have to be Collegiate’s Mitch Fiegel. The guy can talk. Ask him one question and he’s gone. He gives so much information in such a short span that he makes my job easy. Besides, is there really a nicer guy out there. OK, maybe Bribiesca trumps Fiegel, but it’s not by much.

Trying to come up with my No. 3 was a little tougher because Jeff messed everything up by going outside basketball. But I’m going with Carroll football coach Alan Schuckman. I genuinely like this guy — he’s so classy, so kind, such an outstanding coach. He’s always friendly, win or lose, always makes his players available, provides all the media with the nicest preseason information sheet. I could go on and on. Hmmm, maybe I should make him No. 1.

JL: You sound like a correspondent with all this love for Mitch Fiegel, who gets plenty of props from the college students just breaking into the business. I’ve got a little internal debate going about my No. 3 choice, but I’m going to go with Joe Auer, the boys basketball and former baseball coach at Heights. My father has had a few run-ins with Joe over the years, and I wonder sometimes if Joe holds that against me. I hope not, because I really like the guy, and he’s always completely honest when I interview him after a game. He starts talking before you even ask a question, which makes a reporter’s job much easier. He’s another guy that’s good to shoot the breeze with, because he’s a baseball fan like myself. He gets marked off a few points for being a White Sox fan, though. But nobody’s perfect.

JC: I’m with you on Auer, Jeff. Truly a good interview. I especially like that sometimes his quotes show him for the government teacher that he is. I give him extra props for once listening to my 5-year-old sing his entire Christmas song that he was singing in a preschool program. It was the longest song I’ve ever heard. As for Ebright, a very nice guy, who I only see in football season.

Onto No. 4.

Hutchinson football coach Randy Dreiling. This guy cracks me up. It’s not that he’s Faber-funny, nor is he Schuckman-nice. He’s just cool and funny and crass and will say whatever he thinks no matter what. He’s ripped me for not picking his team in our weekly predictions, he’s called me out for being a jinx, he’s been more honest than most people could ever be, he’s said things I could never put in the paper, he’s made fun of my football throwing motion.

And yet, I love interviewing him.

JL: I know I’m running a little bit behind on responding to your choices, but I have to give my thoughts on Alan Schuckman. I always get a little tounge-tied with him when I interview him after games, mostly because all the Carroll games I’ve covered have been played in sub-zero temperatures and it’s all I can do to keep my lips from sticking together when I talk to him. But speaking of Carroll, my No. 4 is their baseball coach, Charlie Ebright. This is a classic example of quantity over quality. Charlie doesn’t always necessarily give me the best quotes or information, but I’ve covered his team so much that we’ve become sort of like comrades and I’ve pretty sure I’ve memorized his cell phone number from calling him so much for preview stories in the spring. I also identify with his team somewhat (My diploma from North just got taken away for writing that) and I’ve gotten along with his players — guys like Bryan Bye, Josh Bird and Ryan Jones.

What I like about our lists so far is that we haven’t had any duplicates. It speaks well to our different personalities, taste in people, and ability to get along with each other about 45-percent of the time. My No. 5 is Andover Central girls coach Stana Jefferson. I’ve questioned her ability in the past because she seems sort of passive sometimes, but I’ve figured out within the last year or so that she’s just always in control, and her calm demeanor carries over to her team’s style of play. She’s another one I can get along with off the floor, and we had some interesting conversations during the Class 4A basketball tournament last season. She thinks I jinx her by predicting success for her team, so I’ll go ahead and do it one more time: Stana, your Jaguars WILL win the state championship this season!

JC: And finally, my No. 5 is former Carroll wrestling coach Jamie Finkeldei. My feelings on Jamie are strong because he always hooked me up at state wrestling. Covering the state wrestling tournament, especially when it was 4A, 5A and 6A, is no easy task because you’re trying to keep on top of everything and miss nothing. I rely so much on coaches to keep me up-to-date on not only their team and wrestlers but whoever else is doing well or was upset. Jamie always did just that. I’d make my rounds of the mats, talking to coaches, and I’d always stop by where Jamie sat. He’d give me everything I needed and more.

JC: I’m a big fan of Stana myself. We talk more than basketball, mainly due to both of us having young children.
Well, that’s it. Our first Top 5 chat is finished. I know I had fun and Jeff is agreeing with me (maybe we actually get along 46 percent of the time).

We want to do this again, but we want to know if you liked it or hated it. And feel free to give us some topics to try.

We’re out.

Five best

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Joanna

Jeff and I plan to start something new tomorrow where we debate/argue over a topic. We’re psyched to get it started with our five favorite coaches. Or was it the five best quotes? Either way, we’re going to have a chat.

I think I’ll get it started with my five favorite basketball venues. Maybe Jeff can weigh in later or post his own.

I love McPherson’s Roundhouse. The venue is excellent (especially since they put in new, much brighter lights). And when the place gets rocking, especially for boys, it is deafening. Plus, I love how avid the fans are, young and old. Adding to it is boys coach Kurt Kinnamon, a fun guy to watch as he yells, rips his tie off. It’s great.

East High — old and new. I know how bad the old gym was, how old-fashioned, how spilled pop from the bleachers above leaked onto the courtside below. But it had such charm, and I loved how people had to show up for the JV girls games to get a seat. As for the new gym, it’s so comfy, bright and large. It’s a great place to watch a game.

North High — I know there are those who want this replaced, and rightfully so. It’s old-fashioned and there are plenty of seats with obstructed views, but it’s a great angle to watch a game from, and I love the history.

Goddard — Truly one of the nicest gyms in the area. When it was built, it was so awesome to walk into the building, then walk down to the court. Throw in the fact that the auxiliary gym is above and to the side of it, with the bleachers right there. It’s great.

Bishop Carroll — This is a cramped building, but it doesn’t take much for a noisy crowd to reach the level of deafening because of the crappy acoustics. It’s murder during volleyball season — the screaming of two matches going on at the same time is a sure precursor to a migraine.

Where do you want to watch a game?

Rankings agony

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Joanna

Jeff and I just finished typing up wrestling rankings. Now, wrestling rankings have a wide following and we love it that the KWCA  updates them so regularly.

But there is no good way to get these into the paper without incurring carpal tunnel. 14 weight classes, five players listed per weight, four Classes of schools.

That’s agony. But the fun part about it is the names. I love Paola’s Sharky Slyter. There’s no name better than that. Atticus Disney comes close, that’s for sure.

Other faves are Wichita North’s Diamond Wilson; Kash Biddle, Ark City; Benny Armstrong, Andale; Matt Noblet, Paola; Buzz Hermreck, Paola; Francisco Antillion, Scott City; Cas Spangler, Beloit.

Aren’t names fun?

Tonight’s games (1-29)

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Whew! What a night of high school basketball.

I don’t care if you like girls basketball or not, but South beating Heights has to catch your attention. The Heights girls, who I bet will still go on to become the first 6A team to win three straight titles, got upset by South in overtime. Let me be the first to point out that I JUST wrote how I was disappointed by South. Well, consider my reaction premature. For the Heights fans, I’m not taking pleasure in your defeat, but as I’m a sportswriter, I like to see some drama playing out in the City League. Frankly, there’s no drama if you beat everyone.

So does this mean that Andover Central, a 4A team mind you, becomes the state’s top-ranked team? (The Jaguars smacked Rose Hill tonight.)  I don’t see how they can’t be. Andover Central proved itself by beating a strong 5A team in Bishop Carroll, so I say, props to the Jags.

Also on the girls side, Carroll beat Goddard. Nice win, not exactly a perfectly-played game, but nice nonetheless for the Eagles.

South boys continued their top-notch season by beating Heights, exacting some revenge for a 12-point loss in the season opener. It’s a nice win for a team that has been playing some awfully good basketball.

There were some not-so-exciting games, though. Southeast over West 93-40. Ugh! And that was without a banged up Jordan Cyphers. Carroll beat Goddard for a much-needed win, but, my goodness, it was dull. I struggled to stay awake. Even the student sections were quiet. Never a good sign.

Wichita Trinity also avenged its season-opening loss, handling Belle Plaine 60-39. Oof.

Overall, an interesting night.

I do have a couple observations. I thought that there was going to be an emphasis on keeping coaches in the coaches’ box. Doesn’t seem to be. Everyone I’ve seen this year takes the same liberties they have every year. Not that I care, just don’t say it’s going to be emphasized and then it’s not.

Players, stop whining to the officials. Ask a question, fine. But let your coaches whine. It’s what they get paid all those thousands of pennies for.

I still hate double fouls. I think they’re stupid, and they happen way too much in high school. Although nothing trumps the double foul on a block-charge. Horrible!

Fans, where are you? I understand that the girls tournaments don’t draw well. Fine. But Northwest at Southeast was poorly attended last week. And tonight at Carroll, there was a strong crowd for the girls game from Goddard, but the fans were quiet. Why? The most I heard was the one kid calling out “Julia” as in Julia Marshall when she shot free throws. That’s it. Boring! Basketball should be fun, yet there I am in the Concrete Cave at Carroll and nary a headache pain started. I remember when I’d get a headache just walking into that place because of the terrible acoustics that rattled my poor brain.

That’s all for tonight.

Rose Hill’s Foltz ready to announce college

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

But lineman Blaize Foltz is keeping where he’s going a secret. For now.

His dad sent me a press release this afternoon to say that Blaize will have a news conference on Feb. 6 at Rose Hill High. He said Blaize’s choices are between TCU, SMU, Buffalo and Northern Illinois.

I’ve always liked Blaize, and his dad is a good guy. I just don’t like secrets. I want to know info now!

But that’s just me. I’m impatient.

Arthur Brown’s a PARADE All-American

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

As I posted earlier on Kansas.com, East linebacker Arthur Brown is a PARADE All-American. No surprise here. Just one more honor for a standout athlete.

We’ll be receiving a plaque to present to him, but Arthur’s already on to bigger and better — the University of Miami. No doubt he’s already entrenched in football, football, football. Oh, academics, too.  No doubt there’s quite a transition to college life, all while still essentially a high school senior.

I don’t know if I would want to head to college midway through my senior year. Not that I had a chance; certainly wasn’t anywhere near his level. But senior year was an excellent year.

Then again, college was an amazing time of my life, so different from high school. The cliques disappear, the parties improve, the classes become more intriguing, usually. A lot of my high school friends preferred high school. Not me. Give me college any day.

Any signings out there?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

So I got an e-mail announcing the signing ceremony of North’s Darius Parish with Kansas next week.

Signing day is always exciting for the athletes, families and schools.

Got any Division I signings out there? Regardless of sport?

Who’s the best of the best? Who do you think deserves to go Division I but might not be?  Who’s a surprise?

Fill me in.

Tonight’s games (1-29)

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Check out a full complement of game coverage in Wednesday’s paper. I’m not sure if Kirk’s glad I’m back, since I scheduled a full eight games of coverage tonight. Then again, is it my fault that there’s some outstanding games tonight? Heck no!

In the City League, I’m checking out Goddard at Carroll, because I want to see this Goddard girls team, winners of the Free State tournament, take on Carroll, which got handled by Andover Central in the finals of the Newton tournament.

East at Northwest boys is intriguing because it’s East, and Northwest is always dangerous.

Heights at South has promise for boys and girls. Girls might not be as interesting as the first time the teams met, when it was a nail-biter. I did think South would be more dominant with the addition of Christine Elliott, but she will cause problems for Heights. On the boys end, Heights won the season opener by 12, but  South has had quite a stretch since then, only losing to Southeast.

The undefeated Andover boys travel to Andale, which is on its own winning streak. This game precedes Friday’s Andover at Andover Central game.

Then there’s the Rose Hill at Andover Central girls game, with Andover Central ranked second overall and Rose Hill at 12-1. Wow. What a matchup.

Can’t beat Wichita Trinity vs. Belle Plaine boys, either. Trinity’s lone loss was to Belle Plaine to start the season. And these teams are averaging 66-plus points each.

Anyone have any picks for these games?

I’ll try to blog after deadline tonight, so come on back.

Some wrestling love

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I know the wrestling fans are out there. Come out, come out wherever you are!

I need to get up to speed on this sport, so help me out.

I was surprised to see Atticus Disney now out of the area. Too bad, not only was he an excellent wrestler, he had a great name.

Speaking wrestlers, did I see Jaydan Bird transferred to Conway Springs? Is he done wrestling now and only focusing on football?

No surprise, Carroll keeps rolling. The Eagles have won all their tournaments and have won 95 straight duals. And counting… Can anyone get sick of hearing about how good this program is? Not me. I’ve always loved the Carroll coaching staffs, too. Carroll’s also beaten Goddard twice this season in tournaments. Is Carroll going to get that 5A title that escaped them last year?

Then there’s Goddard. Once again, a strong team. I’m quite certain — I don’t even have to ask — that this program is dead set on winning the 6A title. Should have had it last year.

So come on wrestling fans, let’s hear from you.
