The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

Basketball vs. Football; Brown vs. Cyphers

Jan. 26, 2008 @ 7:28 p.m. by Kirk Seminoff

Which do you prefer?

I’m curious about this because of the lack of discussion on the varsitykansas.com forums and in this blog when it comes to basketball.

Are you all that much more into football? If so, why? If not, why?

I personally enjoy both equally. Maybe because it’s my job, but I love football in its season, basketball in its season. I can’t imagine shunning conversation on either one.

I also find it interesting that certain folks are able to raise such ire and interest while others aren’t. Why isn’t Jordan Cyphers such a topic of conversation like Arthur Brown is? Is it because he doesn’t have his own Brian Butler?

For that matter, sticking with football, why isn’t Chris Harper a bigger topic of conversation? Is it also because he doesn’t have Brian Butler as his advisor?

Just curious and would love to hear your thoughts.

Ya know, there is nothin like seein a blindside hit in football and equally as awesome is seeing a ball sent into the stands at a basketball game. The forums are dead cause they got moved. Nobody wants to take the time to find them. I feel there is a lack of talk about all stars in the city. It is not often that we get a 5-star and a 4-star prospect in the same season. Arthur gets talk cause he is a 5-star prospect. In basketball I dont think anyone gets talked about to the extent they deserve. Jowanza Poland from East is a great player and he is shadowed by Garrius Hollomen. At South I feel Marky Nolen and Lance Russell are D-1 prospects but they get no talk about them. It is the simple fact that everybody who follows highschool sports in this town are a “wannabe” or a “has been” and they cant hadle the fact that they didnt make it or wont make it. I love to watch Cyphers, Hollomen, Poland, Nolen, and Russell play in basketball and I enjoyed watching Harper, Brown, Bowin, Randle, Tillman, Henderson, Pick, and thompson from DC during football season. You can not compare Football season and Basketball season. They are both great in there own way

I am an East High alumni and I am in love with basketball. The site however does not update basketball scores and other information soon enough to generate excitement. By the time information hits the site we are already into the next game.

The main reason for the lack of conversation is because of the new forums. No one likes them, the Scholfield Lexus ad is annoying, and now we can’t even leave a comment on the articles without having a login name and password.

As for the topic of football vs. basketball…

I think basketball deserves more love from Wichitans. Sure Wichita had a few 5-stars and 4-stars during the season, but did any of them do anything big in the playoffs? How about your focus on the Brown brothers and where they’ll go next year and Chris Harper leaving KSU for Oregon, switch to Southeast’s undefeated record, East’s midseason revival, or the great girls basketball going around in this area (Heights, Bishop Carroll, Andover Central, Derby…). Those teams have a great chance of competing with the Kansas City area schools for class championships; something football couldn’t accomplish. Wichita football is like any NFC champion facing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, they dissappoint every year. Wichita basketball on the other hand, is what we are known for. So get off the football train and get on basketball now, because before you’ll know it… it’ll be baseball season…

I agree, it’s a lot of bother to use this site now. I used to read it daily, now maybe once every 10 days or so. And when I do try to post something, it sometimes doesn’t show up anyway. So why bother?

Football is one night a week and even if your team stinks, you still follow them.

Basketball is a couple nights a week, plus chuck in some tournaments, mix in a few postponements and it’s hard to keep track and easy to lose interest.

I like to see standings and statistics, which are tough to find for Kansas high school basketball.

CLFan is right on about putting some focus on Wichita high school basketball. I’m not from Wichita but I like reading about the Carl Taylors, etc.

Just gonna say that I am Pro-South, and with that said i feel there should be a story on South B-ball, not just cause they play Southeast and its 1-2 in the City but because they have won 11 games and only lost 2! I cant remember the last time that happened at south I cant even remember a time when they were 6-7 letalone 11-2 at this point in the season.

you are so right Austin here is a team that was 3-18 during 2006 season under coach davis ,2007 season 7-15 under coach allen currently 11-2. i have been a south from 2002 to present, was not around during the years of the past. but look like they made some good runs CL during that time. so yes a story would be nice

I noticed how slow the traffic is over here. Then I log onto the Topeka Capital Journal web site and notice how much traffic there is over there. I’m not sure it’s a football vs. baskeball thing as it is this web site. I loved the web site when stats and games were being updated weekly. There seemed to be great sparring among the area team’s fans. But then everything came to a screetching halt over here. No basketball stats, no discussions, no controversy. I find myself logging onto the Topeka site nearly five times more frequently, which is too bad, because I reside in south-central Kansas.

I have stopped using this board because I find it amazing that there is so much attention given to the East and Southeast mens basketball teams all of the time. I realize they are good teams that have a lot of potential but honestly what have they accomplished other than winning the City League? After all a City League team has to win that. Meanwhile across town you have a girls Basketball Team in Wichita Heights that has won what 4 of the last 7 Kansas State Championships and they are an afterthought. I guess it is still a mans world. Maybe if they cut off their hair and wear longer shorts they will get the recognition they deserve!

South made it to the state tournament in ‘98 & 2000. Not that long ago. Not to mention all the state titles from the late 80’s and 90’s. South has a great basketball tradition that most of the people in wichita forget. Coach Eck built a CL dynasty, if he would have stayed at South his record for wins would be untouchable!

Maybe it’s just a numbers game.
With FB you have about 40 players with the potential to get in a play or two. Add in a Parent or Aunt/Uncle or cousin and you have 120-150 ppl with a vested interest in the game.

BB maybe 7-8 get to play. So now your talking 25-30.

A D-1 College can give out 85 FB scholarships and 13 for mens BB.

History says if your not a “phenom” in the CL (or really ANY Kansas league for that matter) you just don’t get much press or a D-1 basketball scholorship. Therefore alot less interest and alot less talk.

A “really good” Kansas FB player has a chance to get a D-1 Scholorship. (look at the big 12 rosters)

A “really good” Kansas BB player goes to a juco, or if he’s really connected, “walks on” (look at the big 12, MV, rosters)
