East beats Southeast. Just like I called it.

OK, that’s not true. I picked. Well, this is what I get for predictions. This is why I never predict games. Whenever I do give in and make a prediction? Know the opposite will happen.

East beat Southeast 73-68 in overtime. I didn’t call it, yet I’m not surprised.

Southeast won in dramatic fashion in the last meeting, in overtime, but East didn’t let it happen this time.

Garrius Holloman was the man in the overtime, scoring six of his 20 points in the period. Even though he battled foul trouble for most of the game.

Ron Allen was thrilled with the win, so was Holloman.

Carl Taylor was furious. He watched his players miss three inside looks — that should have been made.

It was a great game, though, one I’m so happy I got to cover. Too bad Valentine’s Day kept away some of you. You missed another classic.

Was there or was there not a goal tending on the very last play in regulation? After Jordan Cyphers hit the 3 to tie it at 64, Adonis Gannt was able to get a steal during the inbounds and go in for a lay-up, but (I believe) Garrius Holloman blocked/goal tended the lay-up. Coach Coleman of Southeast pleaded his case to the ref but the ref responded with a “no way.”

Intresting, maybe these refs were aware of the contoversial four-point play that sent the first game in to overtime and held back on another controversial call to end this game.

Also, the fouls were extremely lopsided in overtime. If I remember, Southeast had 6 fouls, and East had none.

Overall, it was an impressive game and hopefully these teams will play one more time this year during the state tournament. Next year, this rivalry will lose some of the luster due to the graduation of Cyphers, Gantt, and Holloman. Mainly because we’ve seen them grow-up and play over the last 4 years. Cecil Shaw, Joe Mitchell, Leon Flowers, Marcellus Alberson, and Marcus Adams will continue this great rivalry next season.

i didnt think it was a goal tend. but im sure if it was ESPN and we slowed the replay down some, we could take the play apart bit by bit. but i thought the refs did the right thing by sending the game to overtime especially since the last time they played each other the ref called a foul forcing the game into overtime. adonis probably didnt see it but he clearly numbers while he was going up for the lya up against poland. he had tomlin and cyphers behind him for layups but doesnt matter.

i didnt think southeast played their A game last night,. they seemed like they were tired and played with no purpose the first 2 1/2 quaters of the game. i saw a lot of walking by SE players. not getting back on defense. gantt didnt start the game, dont know why. he really didnt do much in the first half. i think he had like 5 turnovers in the first half trying to make the exciting pass instead of the simple play. joe mithcell and cecil shaw didnt play like they were capable of. tomlin seemed a step slow last as well.

they have to get it together since sub state and state is 2 weeks away. they still have to win a least 1 game to win city. a win 2 remaining games to win sole possession of the city league.

does anybody know the sub state pairings that east, heights, nw, south and southeast are in? i have been hearing that the substate brackets were switched around this year.

What was the final attendance number, Joanna? Not only was it Valentine’s Day, it was also a 9:00 start time on a school night at a venue halfway to Newton.

Adonis Gantt has the worst attitude I have seen in the City League in a very long time. He cost his team this game. He was outright disrespectful to his coach. He is too good of a player to act this way. If he has a decent coach in college he will be home quick because there is no way a college coach will put up with his attitude. I feel bad for Coach Taylor. Adonis needs to grow up and those close to him should let him know instead of supporting the way he carries himself.

the first half adonis hurt southeast because instead of passing the ball he tried dribbling between 2-3 everytime down the floor. when he turned it over east raced down the court to score easy baskets. when east went up by 11 at halftome, i was like here we go again. i dont know what he did not to start the game but he joe mitchell starts in his place it kinda seems to mess with how the team plays. mitchell plays a lot better when coming off the bench.

i just dont see how jordan cyphers can let HIS team come out like this and play with no fire, passion and heart until late in the game. jordan has to be the one to say come guys lets go, that DI scholarship come with a price. if southeast doesnt go far in state people look at him has to say did step up and be a leader.

in order for east to go far in state 1- holloman, adams and hardyway will have to stay out of foul trouble, east needs there bigs and hardyway is guy that make them go. 2- they have to make some outside shots because most team will pack in on them like carroll and heights did when they lost. 3- sub state will be a big issue for them becuase they will have to play south again for the 3rd time this year in order to make it to state. that will be tough to do. i look for marky nolan and garrious holloman to go at it. they been playing against one another for years.
