Hatin’ on officials
Feb. 19, 2008 @ 9:22 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
OK, but it’s not me hatin’. I know I’m a little late commenting on this story about St. Marys not allowing a female official to referee a boys basketball game. But I have to admit I was flabbergasted by this.
The NBA has women officials, other high schools don’t have a problem with women officials. I realize that the school stated it was for religious reasons, but I can’t imagine God wanting them to discriminate based on gender.
I certainly don’t want to turn this into an ugly debate on politics or religion. I just can’t believe that there are still people in power who make such ridiculous decisions.
And don’t tell me that women can’t officiate boys games, that they can’t keep up. I’ve seen several women officiate boys games in the area, and they do fine. They keep up much better than those overweight male officials do. Do the women make mistakes? Of course. So do the men.
And the men coaching during those games, how did they act toward the women? Exactly the same. Just as it should be.

They say it is against their religion to have a woman in power over a man. But most religions follw some what, the Bible, and it says nothing in the Bible about women not being in power over men

This press release is on the website of the Society of St Pius X - http://www.sspx.org/whatsnew.htm
It is this society that operates St Mary’s Academy. They are a group of conservative, traditionalist Catholics who reject most of the reforms Vatican II. The Society was at one time considered schismatic, but as successive popes have become more conservative the schism has healed and now the Society operates worldwide, responsible only to the pope, not local bishops.

Most conservative Christians have some type of statement in their beliefs which places men above women - if only a little - based on the fact that Eve was created from Adam’s rib and was to be a ” helpmate unto him.”
From the Southern Baptist <> http://www.sbc.net/aboutus/basicbeliefs.asp
(The husband) “…has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the he headship of Christ.”

Ummm… could I please have a partial take-back on my last post. It should read :
… based on the statement in Genesis that Eve was created from Adam’s rib….
I really don’t want to get flamed for insulting anyones religious beliefs.

A follow-up to the story, the female official was given her check in lieu of not working the game (NO, that doesn’t make it right). She went to a resturant in town, bought a $9 meal, and left a $41 tip for the waitress, basically saying she didn’t want their money.
From watching the videos I’ve seen of her games, very limited clips, she appears to run the court very well, meaning athletically and in a crisp fashion, which tells me she’s done a lot of work to be polished.
Just don’t generalize “overweight male officials”, because as one myself, I’ll run all day long against just about anyone on the court, anywhere at any level! It’s as bad as generalizing that women shouldn’t be “in power” over men/boys.

It’s just another example of hypocrisy in a Catholic church. I would be interested to know how many of these “young men” went home that night and were under the authority of their mother - a woman. What about in a household where there is no father? Hmmm - I suppose she would have to clear all her decisions through a preist. How many of these “young men” have mothers who work outside the home and have some type of authority over a man or “young man”. Who teaches these “young men” in class? I would guess it is a nun - a woman - in many instances who has the authority to demand respect and I would guess if two boys were to start fighting in class, this nun would take charge over the boys. What would she do if one of the “young men” drew a gun? Sure wouldn’t want to rock anyone’s world by expecting a lowly woman to step in and take charge of the situation…just let him shoot up the class and let mayhem reign!
