Tonight’s results (2-19)

What a day this has been. Please God, let my baby sleep through the night. I need it after a roller coaster of a day. First we hear Bryce Brown has orally committed to Miami. Already. Not really surprised to hear it. It’s pretty cool that he’ll be with Arthur. I think their relationship is great — brothers who truly care about each other. But my next question is less sappy — does this mean Bryce won’t be here for his senior year? I’d love to know.
The day didn’t end there, though. Heights girls beat Carroll by two. Sounds like it was quite the game. But did anyone really expect anything but? Of course not.
Then Carroll boys knock Heights out of a tie for second with a one-point overtime victory.
And then Marky Nolen gets ejected yet again and South falls apart despite only trailing Kapaun by six points. Coach Deon Allen got T’d up as well, which led to eight straight free throws by Kapaun’s Brett Rickert. Kapaun shot 30 free throws in the fourth quarter, 25 in the last two minutes, 38 for the game.
Then North lets a golden opportunity — Southeast’s Adonis Gantt had three fouls in the first quarter, Jordan Cyphers had three with a minute gone in the second quarter — completely slip away. Southeast wins 100-55, with Taylor Salome leading the way with 25. The kid has a nice little shot. Then North coach Ben Mitchell gets T’d up, then immediately given another T, so he’s gone. Which means he won’t be coaching in North’s opening game of sub-state next week. Which means his season could be over with.
Tired yet?
The North girls lost to Southeast, but coach Edward Tate sure tried to make it interesting by starting to foul Southeast with 2:51 remaining and a nine-point deficit. Huh!
Then Southeast has the longest parents night known to man. This was actually enjoyable, though. Loved seeing the parents — Southeast’s Brianna Allen and Demetria Williams look just like their mothers, Adonis Gantt gets his height from his dad, Jordan Cyphers from both his parents. Then Carl Taylor is honored and given a framed reprint of The Eagle’s sports cover the day after he won his City League record 251st game.
But that sure delayed the game. Ugh. Until 8:30. Double Ugh. Making the night even crazier was that there were 60 fouls called in the girls game, 47 in the boys.
Then the Kapaun girls beat South. Come on! I know, Kapaun’s not a bad team. Fine. But South is supposed to be so good. What a frustrating team!
Andale boys beat Clearwater, a nice win and Andover only gives up 27 to El Dorado.
So you see why I’m tired? Why I need to get some serious rest here?
Oh, but life continues to be crazy. It’s state wrestling tomorrow! Yes! I’ll be at Koch Arena, chatting with the Goddard Lions and the Heights Falcons and the Northwest Grizzlies and the Derby Panthers, the list goes on and on.
All right. I bet you’re reading this in the morning because you were getting sleep, but after seeing how much ridiculous stuff happened, I’ll bet you need a nap. Enjoy it.

WEll I was at the KMC-South game and the officiating was bad on both ends. Marky Nolen got T’d up twice in less than 30 seconds. And Deon Allen got T’d up for standing up for him. Arthur Gary also got T’d up. He was running back on D and the ref stopped play and gave him a T. The girls game was dissapointing. Christine Elliot got 3 charges called with her back to the defender. She backed her down and spun off her for an easy layup and 3 times it was called a charge, no basket. There was also a play for both teams were the defender took a hop step back and then fell and it was called a charge. I think officals hate Marky Nolen, Yes a cuss word probably slipped out but what game have you been to where nobody curses, including the fans? I guess if get you a rep it better be as the most respectable player in Wichita cause anything else means you’ll get ejected.

Marky Nolen got his 5th foul and was walking off the court, he gave the player replacing him a hifg five and the ref felt Marky was taking a swing at him and T’d him up. Thebench got up and Marky said “Dont let it F*cking get yo you” and got his 2nd T’d. Then Allen told the ref how he felt about that and recieved his T. I apologize for the profanity but I thought I would clarify what happened exactly.

SUBJECT: North High Basketball Coaching 101
(or How to turn a 7 point game into a 40 point blowout)
1. Put your leading scorer on the Bench.(14 ppg)
2. Put your best defender on the Bench.(haywood-4, nolen-6 adams-3, barnes-4)
3. Put your starting point guard on the bench.(39 starts)
4. Leave in guy with most turnovers, no steals, no assists…
Try ALL of the above. If that doesn’t work fast enough, see note 5.
5. Pretend to get completely out of control and get tossed out of the game. (That way you can quit on your players and blame the refs)
I gotta’ get a game tape………
This should insure your legacy as the city leagues losingest coach.
With a City league record of somewhere around 13-85?

So what you’re saying is that coach Allen thinks its ok for his players to swear on the court. Watch the juco coaches walk away from Nolen now. Who would want him on their team? South has a long way to go to crawl out of this one. Good luck to the rest of the team as they get ready for sub-state and to the administration as they look for someone who can control his players to coach next year.

does that mean Nolan will miss the first round of sub-state. Will be tough for them to win without him.

Perhaps the rest of the team will decide to win in spite of him. Sometimes, “good teams” get better when they lose a player.

I dont feel swearing is okay but have you ever been to a game were nobody on the court cussed? Marky has a bad rep if he cusses he gets T’d, if Jorden Cyphers cusses he gets told to calm down, it all depends on the refs personal prefrence toward the player.

When will the adminstration step in and do something. How many T’s should a kid get before he is disciplined by someone. Reminds me of Jamar Howard and how he was always hurting his team by not controlling himself.

I guarantee that if Cyphers was getting tossed from games Taylor would sit him out or dish out some serious discipline. No excuse for getting ejected let alone twice. Sounds like his reputation is well deserved.

Your missing the point, if he didnt have a rep he wouldnt have got tossed twice. I am saying he doesnt kiss ref butt during games and that gets him a bad rep, I personally like a player who stands up for himself.

It is one thing to stand up for yourself and another to disrespect the officials. That is like getting pulled over for ticket and telling the cop they are an idiot. He is a kid and should shut his mouth and play. Let the coaches deal with the officials and players play. We will see how he does in the real world when he disrespects authority. Again I don’t feel sorry for any player or team that acts like this, it may end up costing them a state tournament bid and we will see what his pride cost his team.

There’s an awful lot of hate posted on this blog series, and I’m wondering just how well anyone posting knows Mr. Nolen. An awful lot of assumptions are being bantered around by armchair quarterbacks about refing and players alike. Also wonder how you’d feel with your public mistakes being commented on by strangers. I bet Marky doesn’t really care what any of us thinks. . .and is probably healthier for it.
