Not too many surprises tonight in first-round sub-state action in 5A and 6A. Northwest girls are out, Derby had some problems with Southeast but pulled it out, Maize beat Manhattan, Goddard beat East, Heights beat Topeka. South did beat Garden City, as it should be.

In 5A boys, West is out, but Kapaun and Carroll will meet in the sub-state final. Although Carroll certainly made it way too interesting against a team that came in at 2-18. Carroll finally took the lead in the third quarter and the game was tied with three minutes to go. Sounds like an ugly game.

I was over at Heights to see a debacle. Couldn’t believe it, though, that coach Kip Pulliam got a technical when the team was up 29 in the third quarter. He said he wasn’t even speaking to the officials, but he must have said something to irk this official enough. Topeka coaches were highly agitated that Heights was still pressing in the fourth quarter. At one point, an official told one of their assistants to quit staring him down. Such drama.

Could that coach have been your husband……..You are such a homer…..

  2. CM Scott says:

Come on LOL get your facts together. Her husband is a boys coach and this was a girls game. Next time you want to rag on her make sure its relevant. I believe that Heights should not have to adjust they way they play. That is the reason they are the defending champions and are nationally ranked. They are coached to protect that ranking and status and why shouldn’t they? They bring national attention to this area for girls that we have not had before and I believe that because of that other players in the area outside of Heights are being recognized as well. So I say KUDOS to Heights and don’t let anyone bring you down!

  3. whatisup says:

are these antics gonna cost these girls…just wondering…

  4. Spike says:

No those antics won’t cost those Topeka girls…their season is over.

  5. CM Scott says:

joanna’s husband is a boys coach so make sure its relevant before tyring to smash her. I don’t think the Heights coach is doing anything wrong. He has the state defending champions that are nationally ranked and they are trying to keep that ranking. It is because of this that lots of other players in this area are getting attention from major colleges. The Heights team has helped in putting Kansas girls basketball on the map. I say keep doing what you are doing because the whole region is benefitting.

  6. CM Scott says:

And no I don’t think it will hurt his team because once they get to State should they make it that far, they will be playing against teams and coaches and referees who understand what basketball on that level is all about.

I saw that game, and realize that Topeka had four freshmen on the court, but so did Heights at times. Player development is what it is all about, and when you sub, you go all out no matter what to make the most of your time. If Heights has problems at state, it will be against a team with quick guards that can stay with their guards, and a strong post game. The winner of the Goddard vs W. South game, or Olathe South would fit that bill as would Blue Valley. This will be a great tournament in Emporia with a lot of high quality girls involved.

  8. lol says:

do you think she should cover Heights games………..Conflict of Interest………..

  9. hoopfan72 says:

I think she is very unbiased. I think that if no one knew her husband was a coach of any sort at Heights then her writings would not hint at it either. In my opinion she has been covered all teams and schools eually. Good Job Joanna and please dont make me have o eat CROW!

  10. Doodah says:

I see the report about substate scores from Tuesday and Thursday but what about Wednesday?

I don’t see ANYTHING about substate scores - not even box scores ONLINE or IN THE EAGLE!

    WHERE ARE THEY?

  11. Dee says:

Is it my imagination or is the sports department completely ignoring that there ia a 4A Girl’s sub-state going on close to Wichita? AC girls are a must see and I never really see you write anything about them. What up?
