Name your Kansas player of the year
March 13, 2008 @ 8:40 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
Now I do not want your Jayhawk player of the year. I want your Kansas state player of the year. Not Kansas STATE player of the year, but your high school player from the state of Kansas. Why was that so difficult?
Name your boys player and your girls player. And don’t just name one boy and no girl. Or vice versa. Come on. Get in the spirit of it.
I’ll get it started.
Boys — Jordan Cyphers, Wichita Southeast. He not only averaged 21.7 points, but he was key in Southeast winning the 6A title.
Girls — Bailey Gee, Andover Central. This was a little difficult, because there are some wonderful girls players in the state, but Gee led her team to an undefeated record and the 4A title.
Let me hear your thoughts.

I’d go along with Cyphers. I have heard that Kendra
Frazier from Labette County is a terrific player. She
will be playing with Gee at Missouri next season. Too
bad someone couldn’t have kept those two in state.

Bailey Gee is an outstanding player, but I think Tiffany Bias is the real deal. I will only speak to what I’ve seen, but were there any other girls teams in the state that had the talent that Andover Central did? Two bona fide Division I basketball players. Without Bias, Central has a second and a third at the State Tournament in the Bailey Gee’s previous seasons.
I also think you have to give some serious consideration to Kendra Frazier as well. One of the smoothest post players I’ve seen in years. What would she have been able to accomplish had Jolee Sharp (one of the few players who could match up with Bias) from Ft. Scott been on her team.

Jeff Reid out of Topeka Hayden had a great year and led his team to a state title in 4A. He also broke the school’s scoring record. He is also an underclassman and has a chance to put up even better numbers next year.

I agree with both of your choices. I have seen both athletes play during their high school careers and both are extremely talented.

On the Boys side Jordan Cyphers, lead his team all year in scoring and could score in a varity of ways. Tremendous effort in winning a state championship to cap of an outstanding high school career. The best player out of this area since Maurice Evans.
On the Girls side, Jennifer Lane, Probally one of the best point guards to come out of this area in a long time. Avererge 15.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 6.1 steals, and 7 assists this season. Went to State 4 years in a row as a starter with two championships, a runner-up and 4th. Outstading high school player.

Hard to argue with your choices. Both lead their teams to state titles and were great offensively.
