All-Metro: Agree? Disagree?
March 14, 2008 @ 8:12 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
I’m well aware that I’m setting myself up here as any disagreement on the All-Metro team — boys and girls — being that Jeff and I picked the teams. Then again, I think after the past week, I’m immune to the haters. (Wow, I’ve never been reamed before after a state championship story, but I sure heard about it after I wrote about Southeast. Although they all were more upset that Bob Lutz wasn’t there — I didn’t know he was so loved — and that there was only one photo of Southeast, even though it was on the cover of the section.)
Anyway, tell me who you’d want on either team. But you have to back it up. Why should this person be on the team AND who would you take off and why. I think this is fair because this is what Jeff and I went through as we sorted through the ballots from coaches and discussed who were the best picks.
Have at it!

I understand its pretty unfair to have two players on the same team on all-metro, but why not Adonis Gantt??? We was the best guard in the area if not the state. He could score, pass, play defense and best of all he had so much heart. Sure he showbated and talked a little too much trash, but that was just his style of play. Adonis should’ve been 1st team all-metro because as important as Jordan Cyphers was to Southeast, Adonis made it happen for Cyphers and the 6A state champs.
Also Joanna, was there a 2nd team all-metro? If so, who was on it?

Great job on the girls, and I have to agree with CLFAN on Adonis Gantt. I thought he was the best point in Kansas this season.

I think Russell or Gannt would have been better picks than Steven. Gannt was the best point guard I have seen this season when I watched the state title game. Girls picks were dead on.

Nobody wins (actually 5 kids do) when you pick the top 5 in the whole Metro Area. It’s nearly impossible to choose the best 5 when they don’t all play against the same competition. There is no doubt that the City League is one of the top two conferences in the State along with Highland Park’s league (Hayden, Manhattan, Emporia….). What would Garrius Holloman’s stats be if he played Luke Meisch’s schedule or vice versa? How about Adonis Gantt playing 3A teams all season? There are probably several players throughout the City League that are lesser known to the general public that would “shine” in these other leagues. Don’t get me wrong “players” can play no matter what league their in, but there is a huge difference between the CL and the rest of the area’s leagues. I’m curious what the CL’s record is against non-CL area teams, including sub-state? As for Brett Steven he very well may be the most clutch player in recent memory. He truly is a winner. When was the last time (if ever) a player from the CL led his team to title games in both football and basketball? Considering Carroll plays 15 out of 20 regular season games against 6A teams they very well may have the toughest Strength of Schedule in the State.
