All-State boys and girls: Agree? Disagree?
March 16, 2008 @ 6:47 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
I’m really impressed with some of the dialogue on the All-Metro question I asked, so I thought I’d do the same with All-State boys and girls. Did anyone surprise you? Do you think someone should have been on the team? Back up your reasoning. The process that we go through isn’t just picking off the top of our heads. We’re looking for the best players — not based on potential, what they’ll do next year — but what they did this year. We discussed, we talked about it, we backed up our choices with stats, etc. Do the same with your choices.
By the way, I just wanted to respond to two comments that came up previously — one dealt with was there a second team All-Metro. We only pick one team for All-Metro, be it baseball or football or basketball. The other question was more of a statement, regarding my saying that All-Metro would run on Friday, All-Metro today. This person took a previous response I’d written about my making a mistake about saying when a story would run. Stories and All-State/All-Metro are different. Stories can be bumped based on space or timeliness. All-State and All-Metro run the same time every year - one week after the season ends - which is why I can say when it will run. We plan each year space-wise for the same All-Metro sections and All-State sections.
Again, let’s keep the conversation going here on the All-Staters.

You forgot Dorian Green for LHS on your all boys state team. He led the 6A state tournament in scoring, doing what he has done all year for the Lions team. He is also a great student, with a 4.0. He is the ultimate student athelte.

I think it’s a joke that Cole Fiegel made third team All-State. Can you say politics?

I don’t have any quarrels with the picks. What bothers
me - especially with the girls - is that all these kids are
going out of state to college (except Releford). I certainly
understand the kids making the best choices for themselves
but why aren’t KU, K-State and WSU among those choices
(especially the latter two)? At least Self has gotten a couple
of kids the last two years. Roy never got anyone except
Simien, and that was only because one of his assistants
happened to share a hometown with Simien. Let’s hope
for some better things out of Frank Martin and Gregg
Marshall and the women’s coaches!

How can they exclude Christine Elliot? Funny how she was the only all metro player excluded from the all-state list. Was it personal? And if so, why?

For your response to the statement that somebody made; are you saying that a preview section for state can be bumped to whenever you have an opening? Because State (cross country) starts and ends on the same day. And it usually happens every year, at about the same time.
