Name your favorite spring sport
March 23, 2008 @ 5:27 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
If one of the seven spring sports hasn’t begun competition, it will awfully soon. Check out The Eagle this week for previews on a whole bunch of interesting teams.
What I want to know, though, is what is your favorite sport to watch or play in the spring. But tell me why, too. No one-word answers.
Mine is softball and baseball. I love to watch them and I love to cover them. When I’m covering them, there’s nothing like sitting there, keeping score — I love to keep score! — and eating my seeds. Of course, that’s much more fun in May than it is in late March or early April where you’ll freeze your buns off.
I’ve watched a lot of baseball in my life. My dad was a junior high coach, one of my brothers played and we went to a lot of Minnesota Twins game. There’s just nothing better than sitting back, relaxing at a baseball game. I really didn’t watch softball until I started covering high school sports, but, boy, the game has grown on me. It’s such a fast sport, which I had to get used to again last May when I covered the Class 6A state tourney after I’d been covering the Wranglers. Just the difference in the size of the field was crazy.
OK, there’s mine, now give me yours.

Definitely baseball. The only problem may be the cold temperatures, but watching games in May in the evenings is great.

High school baseball in Kansas can be challenging to watch. Yes, there are some teams that are worth watching when they hook up, but in general, it’s a struggle.
I’m a baseball guy, 100%, but I’ve come to appreciate the State track and Field meet. Now THAT is good stuff!

I’ll go with swimming, based on last “season.” If you’ll recall, the other sports each seemed to have more rainouts than actual games or meets. I love to watch a game on a beautiful spring afternoon, but I think there may have been about three beautiful spring afternoons in all of April and May last year. Let’s hope for some decent weather this time around. The problem with the swimming format, from a spectator point of view, however, is that it is impossible to follow the scoring as the competition goes along. Even the hard core fans and swimmers themselves often don’t know how many points each place is worth. With computer technology, couldn’t someone enter race by race results into a program that would constantly update team totals, which could be reported after each race by a PA announcer? It happens at the City League meet, why not always? Same goes for track and field, another sport which loses drama since often nobody knows who has what score.

I would have to go with track and field. But Mark does have a point. Last year there were a lot of rainouts. KT Woodman was rained out and a couple other meets. But the State meet is crazy. Its fun watching some of the fastest people in Kansas run, because there are a lot of great track and field athletes in Kansas. Last year Lane Boyer of Fredonia was real good and was all SEC in cross country as a freshman. Also Luke Bryant of Clearwater was a real good thrower. Usually scores are announced at a track meet when they get the official results of an event.

Track and field for me, but it doesn’t get much love on this website!

Varsity poetry by far. Poetry is a underated and overlooked sport. Plus it can’t be any gayer than swimming.

Thanks Joanna! You must know that Track and Field in the state of Kansas is the Number 1 sport of Spring. These student athletes are made out of iron, especially the Distance runners. There’s a reason why most kids would choose baseball instead of Track and Field. They would actually have to run everytime they’re in the game. Ironmen sports, men and women both rule on the field, not the diamond, or court!! Go IRONMEN SPORT OF SPRING (T&F)

Without a doubt, T & F. This is an iron man sport, especially the Distance Runners. These kids get no satisfaction watching a boring baseball game. C’mon you gotta respect these student athletes for their off season training and determination. Wanna watch a truely intense sport, come to a track meet, not a diamond or a court

Made of iron?
Running as fast you can while wearing shorts and a tank top, not so much.
Spinning in a circule and chucking a hunk of lead? Don’t see that either.
I enjoy track, but I can’t exactly see it as a sport for supermen and superwomen. It makes for a nice social gathering though.
