Please don’t make this an issue

One of our wonderful online readers suggested that girls and boys basketball games should be alternated for start times. Right now it’s girls at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30. This person is suggesting that half the time that is changed.
I want to somehow convey my feeling on this without using the universal all-caps for screaming. No. Please no. For God’s sakes, no.
It does not work. The City League tried it back in the late 1990s, and it was horrible. If you want to make things equal for girls, this is not the way. Here’s why: After the boys games finished, there was a mass exodus for the door. If it didn’t happen right away, it happened during the game. But the majority of fans were gone by halftime. They didn’t stick around and it was horrifying to see how the players looked when they realized everyone was getting up and walking out.
With the way the time works now, fans show up in the third and fourth quarters of the girls games, when they need those fans to cheer them. There’s definitely an adrenaline rush as the stands fill up. Yet when the times were switched (for half the season girls were at 7:30), it was a dead atmosphere at the end of games.
Fact is, there usually aren’t as many fans for girls games, so at least they’re getting fans now at the end, rather than watching them walk out.
Got an opinion on this? Let me know!

id like that, more time to go get drunk after the guys game! if the guys end at like 7 30, you can go get trashed from then until curfew. instead of waiting 2 more hours!

I’m with you Jo. It was a very bad feeling watching people leave during the girls game. If they WANT to see the game, they will show up at any time. If the HAVE to see the game, it needs to be played first. As you stated, people start filing in 3rd and 4th quarter for the boys game, and that creates some extra atmosphere for the girls ending, which is highly positive! The only other experiment would be to play the girls on a different night, ie. Monday/Thursday, which would only create more logistical challenges and costs that wouldn’t be worth it.

The problem with getting to the girls games in the 3rd or 4th quarter is you still have to sit there and watch about an hour of basketball before you get to see the real show. Girl’s takes FOREVER, they need to make a rule that fouling in the 4th quarter is ok so their games get over quicker.

Night: Funny comment on how long the games take. I’ve covered so many games over the years and girls end at about 7:30, boys at about 9:15. That’s about the same amount of time for both.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It did not work back then and it will not work again.
I’ve videotaped girls and boys basketball games for some of the schools for many years now and I prefer watching the girls than the boys.

My bad, maybe it was because I fell asleep or something, I don’t remember. But I stick by my fouls are ok rule, we gotta get that game over sooner.

There are some true idiots on these boards. To show a blatant disrespect for the girls game is crazy. If memory serves me right the girls in Wichita have been more successful by far over the past 5-7 years than the boys. Show the ladies some respect. If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t say anything at all. Some of you guys are just morons.
