Helmer moves on

South girls coach Mike Helmer is moving on after being hired as the Butler Community College women’s coach. He’s Butler’s fifth coach in five seasons.

Helmer spent the past three seasons at South, where he was 47-23 and took the Titans to two Class 6A tournaments, including a runner-up finish in his first season.

Congrats to Helmer on this, although South will be losing a good coach. South also loses assistant James Cole, who was hired as the East girls coach.

I’ll miss Helmer. He’s one of my favorites, no doubt about it. He’s always fun to talk to, is funny and seems to know everybody and everything. I love people like that. We bonded during football season, too, as we discussed kids — his wife and I were pregnant at the same time.

I think he’d be in my top 10 favorite coaches. You know, I’ve done top five to interview, maybe I should make that top 10 fave coaches. Ah, another day.

Right now I need to start preparing for my softball game that I’m covering tonight. Let’s see, how many layers of clothing is it possible to put in and still be able to move your hand to write? I guess I’ll find out soon.

Best of luck to two great coaches. Coach Helmer and Coach Cole did great things for South High. Helmer ran a great program, and both coaches had a huge impact on kids. They leave some big shoes to fill, and will be missed greatly.

I am really happy for coach Helmer. He really deserves it. He was a hard worker for my football team my school years with Milleson. A guy that know how to communicate with anyone. Coach, congratulations.

How hard is it for a high school coach to jump to the college ranks and have to recruit? Not necessarily talking about Helmer but just a coach in general.
