This was due to the lack of players, so to make up for it football players fill in. The 1st year it was a letter sport was 1980 & I was one of the founding players. The football players enjoyed playing at that time because it help keep them in shape. Now that there are more people playing they (State) moved the season, depending on the size of your school this could be a bad or good thing. For 1 its bad for the smaller schools, not enough players, 2nd it's great for the larger schools they usually have a larger talent pool. Personally I think it has hurt the game fewer Ref's & forces a kid to choose which game he would rather play.
