An (ah-choo!) night in Goddard
April 22, 2008 @ 8:49 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
Excuse me, AH-CHOO!, while I deal with my constant sneezing thanks to my wonderful allergies. Ah-choo!
I was out at Goddard tonight and I love the set-up they have there. There were three games going on — Derby-Goddard softball, Derby-Goddard baseball, Maize-Goddard soccer. There was one ticket booth and you could walk to all three and watch. I only watched the softball game — Goddard won 1-0 and 11-1 — but turned around every so often to check out the action on the soccer field (Maize won 1-0, keeping its scoreless streak alive. When was the last time Goddard’s Whitney Berry was held scoreless?)
It’s just one more example of how Goddard does things right athletically. I had everything I needed if I were a fan (except more tissue! I hate allergies! I didn’t even get them until I moved here.) There were multiple games to hold my interest, all for the bargain price of $5 to watch any of them, the bathrooms were close no matter where you were and there were concession stands, although I had to go to the football concession stands which was fine because I needed the exercise.
All three venues had announcers, although it was weird to have soccer be so silent. I guess there’s just not much to say in a 1-0 game except who’s coming in and out, and substitutions don’t happen much. And it’s not like the Goddard announcer would be screaming Goooo-aaaaaaal after a Maize goal.
Anyway, kudos to Goddard. I’m a big fan of Two Rivers Youth Club where fans can see any game in the City League, they’re all right there, but Goddard does it one better. Now excuse me while I go looking for Zyrtec.
By the way, I wrote this without knowing the baseball score, so if you have it, post it.

Joanna, I have no idea what your pay is, but it seems as if your job is similar to a coach…in hours that is. Thanks for attending all the events you do to report on all the talented kids we have in Wichita, this reader appreciates it very much!

Whitney Berry didn’t go scoreless last night, she didn’t play. Neither did two other starting players defenders Alex Leach and Kelsey Koch. Which lead to a purely defensive game on Goddard’s part.

“When was the last time Goddard’s Whitney Berry was held scoreless?”
Probably the last time she didn’t play. Eldridge wrote a story over it, probably should read it.

Thanks, Emily for the update. I didn’t see our correspondent _ Taylor Eldridge _ who covered the game last night, so I didn’t know that Whitney Berry didn’t play until I read it this morning. (Jurgis, I posted this last night around 9 p.m.)

Goddard definetly has some excellent sports facilities. With those facilities come some outstanding athletes. I think that they have risen to one of the powerhouses in the state when it comes to sports.

Don’t forget about Goddard’s excellence in band! I think that marching band is a sport and it should be reported on.

Band isn’t a sport. Sorry.

We do have a great band but to call it a sport is a little overboard. It is better to not be a sport because then you can practice whenever you want including during class time and seminar.

I’m surprised Taylor Eldridge was allowed to cover a Maize/Goddard game. Considering he graduated from Goddard…. LAST YEAR!
You might want to watch out for Eldridge when he does cover Goddard athletics… just to make sure he sticks to the facts and not just his biased opinion about the school.

whitney is a great player and the game would of been changed with her in. like the fact that goddard wouldnt of packed it in with her on offense. maize hurt themselves on offensive side, not goddards defense, there where many times when maize could of scored but passed the ball straight to a goddard player to clear it, it wasnt goddards deffense that held maize to score so little, but maize’s offense… thank you. and emily, we both know she wouldnt of scored anyways.

You are right, Patrick, Taylor Eldridge did graduate recently from Goddard. And you know what? I have no problem with what he wrote. It’s the first time he’s covered a Goddard event, and I believe he did a nice job. Maize won — he gave the Eagles their due. Goddard played an outstanding defensive game against a team that has been rolling its opponents — he gave the Lions their due. Not sure how you can find anything wrong with that.
Taylor is a young writer, but he’s one of the best young writers we have for several reasons. He can write and tell the story, he keeps his own stats, he’s unbiased in his coverage as we all are and I have not heard one complaint from any coach about their dealings with him. That says a lot about Taylor.
We take seriously the issue of bias. We talk about it with our correspondents before we send them out to cover games. Before sending Taylor to cover that game, I talked with my boss about it and he agreed that Taylor was fine. That there wouldn’t be a problem.
So with all that info, did you see bias in that story? I’ve already said I didn’t, but take a step back, try to remove the knowledge of his history and look at the story. He did a good job. He’s been very fair with his soccer notes this season, too, making sure to hit a lot of different teams. And look in today’s paper, the lead in his soccer notes is Maize, the next item is Southeast.

Don’t forget Goddard’s tennis facility. It is impressive and will host the 6A Boys State Championships May 9-10.

and tia stovall isnt any good from maize???
or maybe blair terry who has just as good of footskills and touch as berry???
or kayde kluge who is a pure athlete???
or miranda holmes who i saw rip a shot upper 90 agaisnt hutch this week???
your right maize doesnt have one good player…
they have an entire team of good players
but i promise you, berry would of changed the game. to a point where goddard wouldnt of packed it in. so in that fact of the matter, they wouldnt of had so many people infront of the goal= more goals for maize…
but we dont have a writer… congrats, you got maize on that

“blair terry who has just as good of footskills and touch as berry” I seriously doubt this.
“but i promise you, berry would of changed the game. to a point where goddard wouldnt of packed it in. so in that fact of the matter, they wouldnt of had so many people infront of the goal= more goals for maize” Goddard was missing their leading scorer (Berry), AND TOP DEFENDER (Alex Leach). Full strength v. full strength yields Goddard the victory. The Eagles haven’t seen an scorer as talented as Berry.
