The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

Question of the day

I’ve been remiss in my question of the day or question of the week, but here we go again.

What I want to know is do you go to spring sporting events because you are a parent, you are an athlete, you are a coach or just because you are a fan.

The reason I ask is because everything I go to in the spring is pretty much attended by parents only. Are there fans out there for sports outside of basketball and  football? I’m serious about this. I cover volleyball in the fall and pretty much the fan base is parents and then the football players who stop in to watch after practice. I’ve always wondered if they were there for the game or the pretty girls. I know that sounds bad, but it’s what I’ve wondered — and this coming from a big fan of volleyball.

Wrestling’s fan base is a bit broader, it seems, but spring sports just don’t seem to bring out too many people.

What are your thoughts?

truth be told because spring sports are boring and to slow paced to watch you dont get to see the players make real athletic plays or a dominating player just take over a game i meen no one even really watches pro spring sports so why watch high school

  2. Patrick Hines says:

    I go because I’m a fan…….. Maize spring sports.

    Baseball: 12-3, 4-2: @ Salina South tomorrow, Derby: May 2. @ NW: May 9.

    Softball: 9-3, 5-1: @ Salina South tomorrow, Derby: May 2. @ BC: May 6. @ NW: May 9.

Girls Soccer: 12-0, 4-0: McPherson, today. Carroll: April 28, Hutch: May 1, Winfield: May 6

Track: Mike Flores is an unstoppable force!!!!

I think the reason there are more fans for football and basketball is because well……… The people I’ve asked say that football and basketball is more exciting to watch. That’s why they go.

  3. What? says:

    Nobody watches pro baseball?

  4. Whats up Chuck says:

    Hey Joanna,

Tila Tequila is on again… you watching it???

  5. Vince YOUNG says:

i agree with Reggie Bush on this one its true because the only time people watch baseball is when there playoffs start in the pros who wants to pay money to fall asleep

  6. Joanna says:

I think the start times are the biggest hindrance — I go to games and see lots of parents rushing to get there. As for Tila Tequila? Who? What? I know nothing about reality TV. Really. I’m not lying. I never watch reality TV. Serously! (Actually, I’m not watching it. I always felt a little yucky after watching that show — same thing with Flavor of Love and Rock of Love. Then again, I feel fine when the show’s over. How about Miss Rap Supreme? MC Search cracks me up.)

  7. Schartz says:

Well I’m a high school athlete and I believe one of the main reasons there aren’t as many students in the stands is because there are enough spring sports to keep most kids busy. By the time I get out of practice it is usually pointless to go watch the last inning of a baseball/softball game…

  8. Maurice-jones-Drew says:

i think the real reason is there flat out boring no excitement for the average person
