Second half of the day at state track

It’s the second half of the day at state track — and it’s been this way for, oh, a couple hours. Sorry, I should be better at keeping you all up-to-date. But man, this isn’t like basketball where the computer is at my fingertips. But you all are important, so I’m working at it.
When the switch to Class 3A, 2A, 1A started at about 2:10, they sang the national anthem. I was out at the javelin when they sang the anthem and it cracked me up because everyone realized what was going on at different times because we couldn’t really hear it where we were. So some were standing facing the flag, others were talking, others not paying a bit of attention. Finally, with 3/4s of the song finished, everyone was finally quiet.
Another sign that the crowd had changed was the long line at the T-shirt table.
I saw Jim Cross, a track starter who was at the KT Woodman, and he assured me that he’s been posting on the blog. Saw Cowley mens coach Steve Eck too. I teased him that I was going to blog on him.
Chris Orr is also here. Not sure if you remember him, but he was a sports writer at the Salina Journal, but several years back he was in an accident where he was riding on top of a bus going to a K-State football game and he hit his head on the bridge. I may not have the story exactly right, but he was in a coma and is just now getting back to work. He’s the sports editor at Abilene. He can’t drive yet, but he rode down here with the Salina Journal’s Larry Moritz.
It’s an interesting group of sports writers. I mainly hang with the Topeka Capital Journal guys — Rick Peterson and Brent Maycock, who crack me up. But there’s also a lot of small papers here with writers.
Then I hear that Ellsworth has two “writers” who are actually parents of an athlete. They got passes just to be in the infield to watch their child. That irks me. Sit in the stands like everyone else, you know?
