A new favorite athlete

I know I’m going to take heat for writing about another favorite athlete, which will only solidify my viewpoint that people prefer you to hate on someone rather than praise someone. Go figure.

Anyway, my new favorite is Andale’s Brett Moeder. At the state track meet, you rely on a lot on athletes. They help you find other athletes, teammates or not. They’re primarily the ones you interview because the coaches are somewhere in the stands.

Today I spent time talking to Moeder, who was a part of Andale’s winning 400  relay team. He talked so fondly of his friend, Ethan Ungles, who won the 100, the 200 and anchored the 400 relay. He smiled the whole time. And when I needed to find coach Greg Smarsh to talk about Andale tying for the team title, he walked me to where he thought Smarsh was. When he wasn’t there, Moeder passed my phone number on to his coach.

Maybe you think this isn’t that big of a deal, but think about it. When was the last time someone did something truly thoughtful for you — without them somehow getting something for it? This is obviously a nice kid. A good quote, too.

Never hurts to get in good with a newspaper reporter. And he did get something in return, a mention in the story.

What a wonderful young man. I think it is great to hear a story about a young athlete so thoughtful. Most youth of today are not respectful of anyone much less someone that can’t give him anything. I say hooray to Mr. Moeder!! Best of luck in your future and hope to hear or read lots more about you!!

When you spend two days on the track working with these young people, no matter what part of Kansas they are from, you will meet a lot of “favorite athletes”.

I am not just proud of my son, but all of the athletes, especially the seniors that competed in a sporting event that made it passed regular season. It is such an accomplishment to go out of high school with an awesome season. They all should be proud of themselves. (Every mom has her favorite athlete(s); their own).

I think it’s rare in todays world to have a boy of Bretts age, that thinks much furthur then what they are going to do next, or where they are going to eat tonight, etc. Most teen-agers (mine included), are very self-involved. I see rude-ness from teens everyday, that would not have been allowed in (MY TIME),So I say, knowing Brett, It really is true what a nice, polite, and thoughtful boy he is. Instead of going the other direction ,when you see an adult coming, Because You May Have To Talk To Them!, Brett seeks you out to speak to you! I’m glad other people see it too.
