Don’t put the relay baton on the ground

Ooooo, I just saw something that a few track coaches I know would be quite displeased about. Now, you may not think it’s important, but to these coaches it is.
Do not drop the baton.
Don’t put it on the ground, don’t drop it while you’re walking across the infield. It’s kind of like the Spirit Stick in the movie Bring it On.
Anyway, I saw a girl in the restroom whose baton was on the ground. On the ground of the bathroom. I asked one athlete from Wichita what her coach would do to her if he knew that — she said lots of pushups.
Do not drop the baton. In my house, my little ones know that if you drop the baton, even when they’re just playing around and chasing each other and racing, you do not drop the baton. They’ve done pushups. They have. I admit it. (And they think it’s hilarious, but they know not to drop the baton.)
