All-Metro, All-League, softball parents, Internet sensitivity

Thanks, All-Metro softball posters, you put the blog post in the top 10 with your back and forth.

I think there is definitely a sensitivity about anything posted on this board. I keep going back to this, but the e-mail I got about a comment I said saying I was surprised that Jaydan Bird had transferred to Conway Springs from Andover Central. I explained that all that meant was here he was going to be a senior and he was transferring to a new school. That’s it.

I currently have a coach who I have known for my entire tenure here, who has returned every phone call I’ve ever left for him, who is always kind to me –  but he has ignored my past three phone calls, even though they’ve been about former players of his, and he blew me off at state track last weekend. And the reason that I hear? Because I didn’t take something off the blog that I guess he didn’t like. If you all have noticed, I don’t delete anything. Yet this coach is mad at me about what other people said. Well, there’s not much I can do about it. I’m still the same person.

We’ve had similar situations on this blog with people taking things out of context, with people getting huffy over slights — imagined or not. The current one is concerning all-league softball. I really have not had a problem with the comments posted recently. And I really believe this dad came out and said he disagreed, made sure that he pointed out that there was nothing wrong with the girl who got the all-league selection.

I just didn’t have a problem with it. Yet he has gotten bashed. Seriously, is there no room for someone to have an opinion? It’s OK to disagree with All-League, All-Metro. Really. Don’t like how I picked All-Metro softball, bring it on. I don’t care as long as we’re not getting person and reaming the kids. He did not do it.

I like the discussion, I do. It’s what keeps this blog viable — and fun. But just remember that we don’t have to be so super sensitive. You all are great and I even felt like the discussions against the dad weren’t blatantly evil. Just keep it clean and try to be kind. My God, I sound like a mom. But I do love this blog and I don’t want to lose anyone.

Hey, I’ve already lost a coach/friend over this blog. What’re ya gonna do.

It is really too bad that people have to be so rude. The dad who was sticking up for his daughter really didn’t do anything wrong. He wasn’t rude, he didn’t try to hide his identity, but how many of the people who gave him a hard time gave their identity?

Let’s be gracious people, we all have the right to express our opinion, but we can do a better job of expressing it.

No need to apologize or explain yourself. It’s not like the Internet or blogs were created yesterday.

There are just too many whiners out there.

RikRok is right. Blogs are not real time discussions, are impersonal and faceless. Immature people have an opportunity to say almost anything without recourse.

So what’s the answer here? We want to allow a place for discussion, but you do have idiots that ruin it others.

The answer is there is no answer. Free speech in a format like this has pros and cons. Some will take advantage of the pros. Others will be offended by the cons. Many will have to grow “thicker” skin and be able to laugh off the ignorant to enjoy the format for which it was intended. Your thoughts?

Commish is correct. You just have to differentiate between those attempting to make a point and those with points on their heads.
