3A softball

Did you see this letter to the editor in Sunday’s paper? It has to do with the 3A softball tournament game that included Wichita Independent.

I was impressed with this letter — that originated as an e-mail to my boss, Kirk Seminoff. It was a nice explanation of why the call was made — don’t we all appreciate that?

But what was disturbing was to think that the actions of a few have so hurt Independent’s rep as a community. To think that this ump felt strongly enough to write an e-mail about them is sad. “They showed poor sportsmanship and disrespect to the umpires and opposing team and coach, during and after the game.” Want to know how much that blog post resonated with people — good or bad? It was one of the top 25 blog posts last week, getting nearly 1,000 hits. I’m pretty sure that’s a high for a varsitykansas.com blog post.

Your thoughts?

I cant belive that it took him a week to wright the lettler! But when people have to come up with a good one, they have to put a lot of tought in to it. for ex. 1. When ump. see a girl leave a base early the first thing they do is put up there hands, then when the play is over he calls her out. 2.when a runner is enterfears with a Def. player making a play on the ball the ump. throw up his hands and after the play is over he call the player out. Not when the coach comes out of the dug-out and saids that the player was enterfear with then all the Umpires get togather and make the call in a Champ. game. Come on

    Miss Chadwick-
I am so glad to hear that your blog got over 1,000 hits on this subject. Hey, even the National Enquirer does a good job of selling nothing. The letter you are so impressed with only confirms this umpire’s attitude. He let the fans get to him, and they were not just yelling at him because of that one play. He stopped play too many times during an at bat the whole weekend for petty things. Have you talked to Coach Lyon? So please keep throwing fuel on this fire, I know you think it is good reading and it might be a little more accepted if you would have seen us play this year, but you didn’t, not once. I really miss Duane Frazier, he was reasonable and carried himself with class, that will be missed. Enjoy your hits on your blog, I just canceled my Eagle subscription that I have had for 6 years.

Well, “and now its your turn” I’m sorry to hear you canceled your subscription over such an issue. I guess I’m to blame, but I’m not sure why. Is it because I referenced the letter to the editor? OK. I guess I’m also to blame for all the vitriol regarding Independent on this blog being that I’m the one who wrote the post about how the Panthers were dominating in softball. It was a positive post that turned so horribly negative by the posters.
Or is the reason because Duane’s gone? I miss him, too. He was a wonderful co-worker and continues to be a good friend to me. I’m sure he’ll be happy to see that his 25 years here are still remembered by readers such as yourself. It’s a tribute to him.
Thanks for posting and feel free to e-mail me at joanna@varsitykansas.com if you’d like to chat in private.

Duane would have never mentioned such a big issue on the blog Joanna, you know better than that (sarcastic).
Sorry “and now its your turn”, have fun reading the times sentinel and hutch news or wherever you’ll be getting your news. I will still be reading the Wichita Eagle, kansas.com, and varsitykansas.com. And I too am disappointed that Joanna wasn’t able to watch every single high school baseball AND softball AND soccer AND golf AND track team so she could make her own judgements (again, sarcastic).
I’m glad the people here make mention of big issues like this instead of dancing around them to please one subscriber (or should I say ex-subscriber).

I too support Joanna, I think that “and now its your turn” is a little bitter about the ending of their season. It was a good article and I liked to read what the umpire was thinking at that point. I’ve played against TIS so many times and this does not surprise me what-so-ever. They played with little class and some of the parents didn’t have much either. I guess now more people can see. Joanna, keep up the good work.
