Summer softball

Another way that I’d like to keep you all coming back to this blog is by talking about summer sports. I’m getting ready to start a series of features about summer sports that will include a variety of sports. It should be fun. I’m heading out to the Southwest Boys Club tonight to check out some baseball.
I’ll also try to hit 7 on 7 football and summer softball, while Jonathan will be keeping up with baseball and basketball.
Here’s my first post on softball, thanks to Augusta coach Ray Aguirre, who coaches the 18s Kansas Freedom.
He’s got 11 girls on the team and eight could play 16s. The other three are already 18. In the past he’s kept his Augusta team together, pretty much, in the summer, but so many were playing for other teams that his team is very different this summer. He’s got two from Rose Hill, two from Belle Plaine, two from Bishop Carroll, two from Wellington, two from Heights and one from Augusta.
Pitching is going to be the key. He’s got Heights’ Charlotte White, who graduated and is going to Newman. She’s a two-time All-Metro selection at outfield but one of the top pitchers in the City League. He’s got Kaitlin Kennedy, who finished her sophomore year at Augusta and was All-AVCT Division III. Then there’s Ashlea Bengtson — who will be a senior at Heights — who was All-City in the outfield and a very good pitcher and hitter, too.
Also on the Freedom are Belle Plaine’s Kim Jerrick, a strong hitter — “She can crush a softball. You make a mistake to her and you’ll pay for it.” Brandi Brown, also a soon-to-be junior and also from Belle Plaine, is a shortstop and is a nice player, as well.
“As a whole, we’re really pretty young — pretty talented, but pretty young.”
The team was supposed to play in a tournament last weekend in Wichita, but it was rained out. It will play in Topeka this weekend.

Has anyone heard which summer team Erin Tuttle has ended up on?

Funny thing about the Mustangs. You either love them or you hate them. Oh, there’s one more. You once loved them but now you hate them.

She is not playing this summer and she does not hate the Mustangs at all. She and Mark are good friends, they always have been.

She is playing with the Kansas Stingers.

Talked to her mother last night and that is not completely true. The Stingers have an injured pitcher and they might need help, but she is not on their roster. She is taking two college classes this summer and is resting her shoulder. She will throw for whoever needs a pitcher for a game or two if it does not interfere with her classes and that includes the Mustangs.

I am interested to see how the Renegades do. Their 14-U team has some young talent, quite a few will only be freshmen next year. I am also anxious to see how the Wave does. Devon McReath from Maize is on that team. It should be an exciting summer!

The Wave is loaded with talent and they should do fine. They just keep winning. Renegades 16U & 14U have talent as well. Mustnags have made many changes. It should be an interesting summer in the 16u bracket. Hopefully these girls will get some coverage.
