Chris Harper update
June 5, 2008 @ 11:23 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
I texted Harper this morning after my co-worker Jeff Martin (Jonathan Long calls him his boy, but I don’t think I can get away with that. Your thoughts?) saw a USA Today note that an Oregon quarterback had transferred to Montana State. It seems that Cody Kempt, who was briefly a starter last year, was buried on the depth chart. Here’s The Oregonian’s story.
So I asked Harper if this affected him at all. He said the Ducks have actually had two quarterbacks transfer but they were both below him on the depth chart so it doesn’t affect him.
Sure sounds like they like him in Oregon, though. I’m not surprised. The guy has skills.

So where is Chris on the depth chart?

My bad. He said he’s 2ish, 3ish on the depth chart. To which, of course, I responded that I didn’t know ‘ish’ was part of the depth chart. But he said he’s been told to prepare like he’s the starter.

i disagree. there is no question of his athletic ability, but his days at quarterback,in my opinion, are numbered. he will play, and probably have alot of success, but not at qb. wish him the best though.

He fits the system Oregon runs, ala Dennis Dixon last year.

His days are not numbered at QB and he will play next year as a situational weapon! While he has a long way to go to be a starting QB at Oregon, his size, physical maturity, confidence, swagger and athleticism will put him on the field as the 2nd stringerish in certain situations. Just watching him all spring in practice had me dreaming up some great stuff to get him in the game next year! The kid is a stud!
If he had been trained and groomed as a Throwing QB he might have left spring ball as the #2 QB rather than 3ish. The #2 QB may only play if #1 goes down. i.e. there is no way harper is ready to play a whole game where the defensive game plan is focused on him as a starting QB. Chip Kelly doesn’t go to sleep at night counting sheep, he goes to sleep at night dreaming of his new cool weapons he got under his February LOI X-mas tree!
