North hires boys basketball coach

Gary Squires, an assistant at North the past two seasons, has been named the new coach. He replaces Ben Mitchell, who coached three seasons at North.
Squires is no stranger to coaching. He’s been a head coach in the City League — he was at Carroll from 1980-84 and went 30-51, he was at Kapaun from 1990-92 and was 15-29. He’s also coached at Conway Springs, Iola and Kansas City Turner.
He doesn’t have an easy road turning this program around as North was 3-18 last year and has one winning record in the past five seasons.
As for the South job, I talked to athletic director Michelle Kuhns who said she’d announce that boys job on Monday.

There are some good coaches within the city league. Seems some schools are having to go outside the city to hire.

Squires is good people, and should do well.

looks like he did really well at Kapuan and Carroll.

chibears, ouch. I don’t know how Squires will fair, but there’s no doubt that North has had some tough years. Unless a player like Brandon Polk comes along soon, I don’t see it changing.
But, as I said about the new South boys coach, give him a chance.

They have had players as good as brandon polk.
With coaching experience at Kapaun and Carroll, I expect him to last as long as Dixon did.

i was a little tough, we should give him a chance. Not very many people have had winning records as Coach at Carroll with boys basketball.

Some folks don’t remember that Squires was named city league “Coach of the Year” while at Carroll, and also won sub state and took Kapaun to the state tourney while coaching there!! Given that the city league is the toughest in the state, to even be able to win, being at the smallest school, is an accomplishment. The guy obviously can flat coach!! I see him making some big waves in the league for North now that he is at the helm and teaching the game he knows quite well……..Defense!

It really does seem like a great hire. He has been around for a long time, and roper is right when he says the city is a tough place to win games especially back when squires was at kapaun and carroll. Good luck to North next year.

Well, it’s about time Big G got another shot to sit at the grown-up’s end of the bench. He’s a master of the game, he’s even still got the chops to show those whippersnappers a thing or two about technique, he’s got heart, and plenty of guts. Above all, he’s a motivator. And the beauty about the City League has always been the element of surprise - WHO KNOWS? Good luck, Coach!
