Northwest football

Another update on football for the week. I talked with Northwest football coach Weston Schartz this morning as he was leaving school following the last day of team camp.

“We had a great team camp. We got what we needed to get done. I looked at our offense, we return nine starters. We lose Chris Harper, which will be a big loss. Our quarterback (junior Ethan Chadick) that we have now, he’ll be a good kid. He’s going to surprise some people.

I feel like I’m back at West, as far as tailbacks. Demarcus Robinson was the runner-up in the 100, Andrew Etheridge was seventh in the (110) hurdles. We have two other kids, one’s a freshman and he reminds me of Odell Bell. We’ve got kids, but Heights and Carroll are good, too. I think there are three really, really good teams.

The only  surprise was the freshman kid. We weren’t sure how good he was. He will start. He will start some place. (He’s that good?) Oh yeah, oh yeah.

We have probably seven defensive players back. We’re going to be in the mix, but Carroll is still Carroll and Heights is still Heights. We lost to Heights by 3 and Carroll by 5. We have to win those this year.

I’m taking Demarcus to an elite Rivals camp (at the University of Missouri where he took Harper last summer) just because we want to get his name out there. We may do the Potential Players (Brian Butler) one-day deal. Maybe, maybe not…. Demarcus is special. His speed, his awareness of things and he’s humble. He’s the most humble great player I’ve ever had. And Chris was humble.”

I have to admit I’m looking forward to seeing Robinson this year. I enjoyed watching him last year, too.

I didn’t think it was legal for a coach to take a kid to a camp. It didn’t used to be.

Ron, so good to hear from you. How’s prison? Ha! That’s funny.

It’s not illegal. As long as the coach brings them there to participate and isn’t a coach at that camp, he can drive to the player to the camp. Now these team camps that they go to, like at Fort Hays State or Pitt State, they can’t actually drive players to the camp. They drive separately to the camps. I’m sure there’s a very good reason for it. I just don’t know what.

  3. Ron Mexico says:

Yeah, that’s what I was getting at, that Coach can’t put him in his vehicle and drive him there. It might be the dumbest KSHSAA rule out there, but who knows. They don’t do a lot of things for the kids in my opinion. It’s more about control. I knew you would like the ron mexico handle!

Who’s this freshman? Can we get a name?

  5. Joanna says:

Schartz wouldn’t give a name. I’m sure that he’s trying to protect him from any early talk. But I doubt this kid’s name will be kept under wraps for too long. The season isn’t that far away.

    His name is A.J. Thurman…
