South hires boys coach

Well, I posted this not too long ago, but it seems to have disappeared, so here we go again.
South has hired Ty White, 45, as its boys basketball coach. White spent the past two seasons as a South assistant and was a volunteer assistant for one year at Southeast.
He’s one of three new coaches for next season — North and Northwest also hired new coaches — who won’t have it easy. North won three games last year, Northwest nine. I would guess they’ll continue to struggle this season. As for South, the Titans won 15 games but lost two of the City League’s top players in Marky Nolen and Lance Russell.
Your thoughts?

must not have been many apply. Strange hire with only 3 years experience. I think NW has the best chance of having success.

It’s not as if he’s never coached, though. He’s coached youth sports, etc., and he’s been in the program for two years. I think the latter is probably the most important for that program. As for Northwest, there’s no doubt that Northwest has the better chance. But I still think the Grizzlies struggle simply because of how many players graduated from last year — and that team struggled to win nine games.

I am not saying it is a bad hire, but it used to be that everyone want to coach in the city. head coaches like mark potter left a good cheney job to coach at Kapaun. This year three assistants get head jobs in the city, when was the last time that happened. Suprised that those head coaches outside the city did not apply.

It really isn’t a surprise that good coaches don’t want to coach in the city anymore. With the need to recruit and constant fundraising which is necessary for a decent budget, why deal with the hassle? Suburban schools have bigger budgets and stronger parent support. The really good coaches might as well go to college, where they get paid to recruit and fundraise. This South situation does seem strange. I have a feeling there is more to this story than what is making the news.

Not a good hire, I think South will be run into the ground with this hire. If you have noticed South is losing coaches at a higher rate than West. Something is going on there. Church last year, Helmer and Allen this year. Had new volleyball and bowling coaches this year. New cross country coach as well. Good coaches are leaving South and no heads are raising. Even assistants are leaving. That says something.

Yes, it does seem that South is losing more coaches than most schools and is struggling alot. Between west, south, and north the wins are hard to come by in any sport when there is alot of turnover. I don’t understand the situation with Church were he is now the head coach at heights, and then what is up with the girls soccer coach who was COY at Heights this year? It must just be a tough time to be at South.

getitdone, South run into the ground? What’s there to run into the ground? This team will struggle, no doubt, and not because of a coach. Fact is, the team lost a lot of talent from last year. And while South had a whole heck of a lot of glory years in the past, this program just had its first winning season since the 1999-2000 season.
Give this guy a chance. We know little about him, little about his relationship with players. So he’s someone we don’t know, did anyone really think a name coach would leave a suburban school to take over the Titans?
Now if East and Southeast open up, yeah, then coaches from all over would be raising their hands.
It is a tough time at South, but before writing off the coach days after he was hired, give it a chance. Questioning the hire, fine, but running it into the ground? A little harsh.

Then let’s question why Allen would just up and resign after the “success” of this season. While the early wins were impressive, let’s not forget the lack of discipline and on the court behavior of both Allen and his players the second half of the season. Will White be another Allen, or can he clean up the mess?
It does seem as though the “pre” Ledy coaches have all left South and her hires have not been nearly as successful. While there may be many reasons for this, it does reflect on her leadership and discipline.

There are many off-court and off-field issues that have led to the coaches leaving, in the case of Church it was out of his hands, Allen said he wants to be with his family, Helmer was offered a better higher paying job at a higher level. I Also dont see anything wrong with how Allen coached, he got a bad rep cause he stuck up for his players. When your player gets suplexed on the court your supposed to just sit back and let it happen? Or when the ref tells you he will “Throw the game” if one of your players doesnt stop being so passionate about the game and then you end up losing to a lesser team, your supposed to just sit back let the hits keep coming. Maybe the reason he left was cause he couldnt coach, its hard to coach when you think the whole league, and its supporters, have it out for you.

Maybe the rest of the league would support him more if he could control his players. I have been around quite a few refs in my life and none of them “would ever throw a game.” You stand up for you players but at the same time you have to teach them discipline. I would agree with bballfan that many of the coaches are happy to get away from South as soon as they can since the new principal took over. Also, since jerry taylor retired the school has went downhill. I have to think there is more the story of Allen. No way he resigns after finally having a winning record. Must be something else there.

South was a great place for me for 6 years and the other coaches were always supportative of one another. Did we always see eye to eye, no, but we were all in it because we loved to coach and we loved to be around young athletes and see them become young adults. Each coach who has left South the last few years did so reluctantly because it is hard to leave, so unless your best friends with one of them, please avoid speculation and rumors as they ultamitley only hurt the athletes.

if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck. . .where’s KAKE on our side? Surely if there was anything of disrepute they would have reported it. . .it’s what they do right?
