Burt Helmer’s back in coaching

I couldn’t believe it when I got the call that Burt Helmer was returning to coach boys basketball, this time at Circle. He’s before my time (he finished at Southeast in 1990, I started in the fall of 1996), but I knew who he was. I’d heard about him and his son, Mike, was always one of my favorite coaches to deal with.
I do understand why Helmer’s getting back into coaching, though, because I really don’t think that passion ever dies. I’ve always thought coaches are wired a bit differently than the rest of us. The good ones are constantly looking for new ways to win, new ways to get the most out of their athletes. Then again, maybe that’s not so differently than any other person who’s got a passion for something.
Circle’s certainly fortunate to get a coach like Helmer, though. It should be fun to watch.

Helmer has a good chance to win at Circle. A friend of mine goes to school there and he was telling me about a couple studs that will be sophmores next year. I look for Circle to make a run at state pretty soon.

Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in awhile!! I remember Coach Helmer from his Southeast days. Where did he go after Southeast?

Congrats to Burt, he was a key in helping me get my first shot as a head coach and has given me and younger Coach Helmer great advice the last few years. It’s great to see that he has gotten back in to coaching. I could see that passion redevelop the last few years, when we could hardly keep him still in the stands and on the sidelines. I wish him the best of luck and hope to get a chance to coach against him someday.

Must of been a heck of a source to get that information out too ya! Great Article in the paper! I laid Sod in Big Berts yard the other day and I have not seen him this excited or giddy about something in a while. While he comes across as a rough and gruff man, he really is just another above 50 year old kid!!!!!
I did hear a rumor the other day that his son went to his house at 8:30 A.M. and he was still in bed asleep!!!! What!!!! What old school farm boy sleeps until 8:30 in the morning! hahahaah!
Good luck Big Bert Helmer!!!!!!

I will be interested to see how this works out… I personally don’t think they gave Coach Taylor enough of a chance. IMO, if the team gets any better it will be because of the fact that many of last year’s JV team will be playing varsity. The top 5 or 6 of last year’s JV are a team. Not just good individual players (that can’t play as a team) as we had in the past two years, but solid players that work hard and mesh together well. I want to see success in basketball, as it is kind of Circle’s tradition, but I still think that there should have been more of a chance given to Coach Taylor.
