Derby’s passing and receiving camp
June 18, 2008 @ 6:34 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
I was out of town for Derby’s passing and receiving camp — it was Monday and Tuesday — but I checked in with coach Brandon Clark to get his thoughts on how it went. The camp included quarterbacks, receivers, running backs and tight ends.
“Since we can’t coach, we brought six coaches in from Oklahoma. They were all offensive coordinators or quarterbacks coaches or receivers coaches. They can coach their kids, they can do it every day with their kids. They are doing me a favor by coming here.
I used to (set up this camp) for Garden City until I became the head coach (at Derby). (Garden City) coach (Mike) Smith has always done it at Garden City. He said his kids love coming to Wichita (so Clark started doing it at Derby). There were about 30-40 Garden City kids. We had 30. There were others from the Wichita area and Rose Hill and Campus and Haven.“It’s two days and it’s about repetitions, letting the kids get their reps, letting the quarterbacks throw to the receivers. The quarterbacks coach really hit on technique and it was the same for the receivers coaches. It’s more just repetition. Just let them do a million repetitions. They start off doing a bunch of fundamental drills, the receivers do ball drills and run routes, catching as many as they can. The quarterbacks are by themselves, learning how to throw properly. Then at the end of the session, the receivers get with the quarterbacks for a couple hours and run routes.”
Any other teams having camps or going anywhere? Feel free to update here.

The KSHSAA is such a joke. A Kansas team has to bring in other state’s coaches to run a frickin’ camp.
WAKE THE F UP KSHSAA!!!

Opportunity Knocks- Baseball already almost has the monopoly in the year round participation.
High school baseball coaches have their players for 3 months for school ball, they can coach legion/other teams in the summer with their own players, and some of the players even play fall ball.
Football, the most complex sport to coach at the high school level gets only 3 months for the season and a 1 week camp in the summer. The KSHSAA guys are idiots.

This coming from someone from Hutch, where they have year long football. :) You are right, Derby quarterback had 1700 yards passing last season and I guess with Jake, they will throw much more this year. Especially with their schedule.

Wait till the season starts. A rigorous schedule will have the Panthers ready for the Districts. Snodgrass was very impressive at the passing receiving camp. He looks just as good if not better than last year. His receiving corp has expanded to a few new wideouts and a potential surprise at tight-end. Their running game will be better than last year, kicking game will be extremely exceptional and the best part of the Band-of-Brothers of 09′………………faster Defense!

Derby, Wichita-East, Wichita-Heights, Wichita-Southeast will probably be the hottest 6A district this year. Many high profile players are in that one. “Team concept wins” Who is it gonna be?

I’m kind of curious about Heights. I’m sure the Falcons are happy to be out of the Manhattan and Junction City district, but this is an awfully tough district to be in.

Well TFL and John, as I have said many times before, I am a South High supporter and over the past 2 seasons derby has passed the ball a total of about 6 times against South

There’s no need to throw the ball against south when they cant stop the run, just saying

If the passing game is working, then why run! Mix it up a little i guess just to keep from being predictable. Nice to have both though! Plus a quick defense. I do believe Heights will be one of the teams to beat later in the season.
