What do you want to know?
June 25, 2008 @ 12:44 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
That’s what I want to know — what you want to know.
Do you have a question for me regarding how we do things? Maybe a question regarding a team or coach or player? What about a story I’ve written or am working on?
I might not have an answer for you, but I’ll try. My answer might not make you happy, but I’ll try.
All right, let’s take this another step — do you have a question for a commenter? Do you have a question just in general?
Let me get this started with what I want to know: I want to know if I know who Austin is. I think I do, but I’m not sure. (Hey, I didn’t say this had to be serious!) I want to know why my memory has worsened since I’ve had children. And I want to know what do you guys want to see on the blog.
So there. Feel free to answer my question or someone else’s. But this post will only go as far as you guys take it. (I’m sensing someone is going to say “What I want to know is why ‘guys’ is used in reference to both genders.)

A couple years ago I read a story about kids around this part of Kansas that were doing good in sports that people didn’t read about or were not that popular. There was like a 15 year old kid from Derby that was a real good fisherman, and I think the Potter kid from Cheney for golfing. But who around this part is doing a unique sport this summer or anytime that a lot of us don’t hear about?

I want to know the TOP 10 things to know about next year’s high school sport season. Doesn’t matter what sports or season, I just want to know the headlines to be looking for…

Will the Activities Assoc get it figured out and not send schools hundreds of miles to regionals in track and basketball and football play-off games. In 6A it is not that bad, but 5A on down the travel with the cost of fuel this coming year is going to be a killer for the small schools. Just a thought.

In the age of specialization by athletes; it seems more and more, we see the same happening to coaches. Fewer and fewer coaches are involved in coaching multiple sports.
Dave Houle is a nationally reknowned high school coach out of Utah. He has been the head coach of 3 sports since 1981 and lead his teams to more state championships than any other coach in America.
What coaches do you know of around the state that coach all 3 seasons? Greater still, what coaches do you know of around the state that are Head coaches of 3 sports?

Wow, these are all great questions. I don’t know if I could answer all of these, but let’s start with the top 10 things about the upcoming high school sports year. In no particular order — Bryce Brown (what all will he accomplish, will he break his own record again), Heights boys basketball (will the Falcons be one of the state’s best with an extremely young and highly skilled lineup), Heights girls basketball (can Mary Sims lead this team to another state title after a very disappointing 4th place finish), East and Southeast boys basketball (need I saymore?), Carroll and Northwest and Heights football (it could be a heck of a year for these teams again), Hutchinson football (how much will this team dominate in 5A). All right, that’s all I have for now.
Feel fre to tack yours on.
Three-sport coaches — wow, that’s a tough one. So much time and effort goes into coaching anymore being that it’s a year-round thing, it doesn’t happen that coaches are really even doing two sports. I’d have to do research on this.
As for the KSHSAA and sending teams long distances — you know, Jim, it’s funny that you bring this up, because I hear so often that coaches would love to play four hours away just so they’re not in a regional with a team that they face time and again (think 4A softball regional at Douglass).
Night, I don’t know — who do you know about? I’m doing a Summer in Season series, and I’ve tried to touch on various things that we haven’t written about in the past or am putting a different spin on things (Goose Doughty’s tennis camp, Southwest boys club, men’s adult lacrosse).
I don’t need to be the only one answering, so feel free to jump in.

I’ve heard of two, 17 year old kids down in Belle Plaine that were recently on ESPN for Supermoto during the X Games.

Night, quit being such a cynic. If you hear of a story, report it. The Eagle can’t be everywhere at once.

To the question of how much will Hutchinson dominate 5A…My guess would be that a Kansas 5A team won’t come within 20 points of Hutchinson throughout the playoffs, which isn’t a stretch at all being how the lowest margin of victory in last season’s playoffs was 23 points in the championship game.
I might have to stretch it to 25 or 30.

I want to know……where is “there”? I always hear people say they love someone because they are always “there” for me. Where is that? If we ever find it, and with as many people who say that, I think we will find a lot of people “there”.

Lion’s Roar- unfortunately probably September the 5th to KC Rockhurst (MO).
If they somehow find a way to win that game, then the streak should go up to 49 games by the end of this year. If they then manage to beat Rockhurst again in 2009, then the streak will stretch to 62 by the end of 2009 with a state record 6 straight state championships.

wichita eagle reader — I love it. I wish I had an answer. Maybe it means “everywhere,” emotionally and physically.
John — Jonathan had a blog post not too long ago where he talked to coach Gary O’Hair.
TFL — I’m with you. I have a feeling that Hutch’s streak will end then, as well.
OK, another question that I want to know is why do people dress up to go work out?

Joanna:
I’d like to know if the thought ever crosses the minds of you nice folks in the press that when you’re contacted by someone about a potential sports related story that is emotional or controversial in nature, that it could be that the person is trying to use your platform to with an ulterior motive in mind?
[REPORT A VIOLATION]
June 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Of course it does. That’s why we have the duty — as journalists — to check both sides. There’s many times someone calls and is highly emotional about an issue or is adamant that something is true — but when we check things out, it’s possible there’s no story or the rumor is untrue. Really, we do our best to get all the facts and tell both sides. If we didn’t, you could pay us for a story. That doesn’t happen.
Got a specific in mind?

Sorry Sportsmaniac — the stinking blog spam detector got you.
What schools in particular are you thinking of? What program? Athletes? I’d love specific ideas.
An unbiased story on the Potential Players organization — Fballfan, we expect all stories to be unbiased (except columns of course). Jeffrey Martin, our K-State writer did a Brian Butler story last year. It was a nice read.

Yes that story was well done . The organization has grown a lot since then and at some point it might be nice to do a follow up on the players in the program and the schools they are signing with.

i agree with the gentleman who posted about the smaller schools. How about the SCBL? There has been some good football down there the past two years (South Haven last year, Argonia, Oxford and West Elk the year before) and basketball wise it’s been solid (Argonia boys two years ago, Argonia girls this year, South Haven girls last year, Oxford boys the past two years)

On more thing I want to know. There is all this hub bub over teams going to contact football camps and having there coaches coach them. There are a ton of schools that do it, and some claim it’s illegal, yet the state hasn’t addressed it. Can you find out how that system works, what’s legal and what isn’t? I just want to know if I have somewhere to play when I get out of the Pen in Leavenworth.

Joanna,
I’ve heard a lot about the high school football teams, but there are also a lot of good cross country and volleyball teams around the area. Can you give some information about some teams around the area in those sports?
