Parents and summer sports

I went out to the state softball tournament at TRYC tonight — I plan on being out there this weekend for a story that I’m working on. And I looked around at all the parents, sweating through their shirts as they suffered through the gawd-awful humidity and heat. And I was impressed.
Yes, I know that there are plenty of parents living through their children, parents who push too hard, parents who are jerks, but you know what? They have to love their kids to sit in that heat.
And after leaving there I went to see a couple basketball games at Wichita Collegiate — and my feeling of love for parents died quickly. The games were fine, it wasn’t too awful hot in the little gyms. And then there was a foul that went against one team. It was an OK call. Could have gone either way. But it went against this parent’s kid, so she followed up her berating of the officials with “Next time you foul, really foul.”
Man, I hate that stuff. That’s like asking the kid to hurt another kid because you’re mad at the official. Unbelievable.

I agree with you. I’m amazed what some parents say to umpires and officials. I can’t believe adults who come to their kids games and yell vulgarities at the umpires. How would those parents like it if the umpire’s parents came and yelled at their kid. Look, I know that an official or umpire won’t be right everytime, but they’re trying to do their jobs just like the athletes are trying to do theirs.

It’s not “unbelieveable.”
That’s the sad part. That crap happens far too much.
Some parents feel the need to be part of the show, like they’re there to entertain the rest of us with their “observations.”

As a parent, I don’t feel I am trying to live through my children. I am just trying to give them the opportunities and support that I never got as a child. We aren’t all bad……

no yourt not alone but 1 knucklehead will affect the whole crowd sometmes. Then it feeds off itself sometimes with other parents.

Probably wasn’t a foul. I’m guessing maybe one player was just trying to “intimidate” the other player, which of course, is acceptable and no foul should have been called.
