Garden Plain football

And my weekly post updating you about area football continues here. Please feel free to check the archives for June if you want to see updates on other teams, including Kapaun, Hutchinson, Derby, Conway Springs, etc.
I spoke with Garden Plain coach Todd Puetz, who kindly took a few moments out from baling hay to talk with me about his team. Sadly, he is not a reader of this blog, says he’s too busy. He proceeded to tell me about the farm as well as he and his wife are expecting their seventh child. So congrats to them and I’m glad that he, ever the accomodating coach, gave those minutes to me. And you.
Here’s what he had to say:
Garden Plain does not go to a team camp because most of its players are multi-sports athletes and the summer is a busy time. He also cited the high cost — $150 or so for each kid. He said there might be a time when they’ll go to team camps, but they don’t do it right now.
“We do a 7-on-7 at Hutch and that’s pretty much all we do. We do stuff in our pgraom, lifting and 7-on-7, the kids have a workout to do for running and they get it done. We’ll have our team camp at school July 27th.”
And about the upcoming season, when Garden Plain tries to defend its 3A title.
“We lost some very good kids, there’s no doubt about it. But I feel that our kids are going to be very competitive. There are a lot of kids waiting to prove themselves. They’re wanting to do well. It’s not like they’re cocky and they think it’s all them. But a lot of them are looking for just the chance to start varsity. A lot of them, I know some of our sophomores could have started at a lot of schools. But they sat on JV last year, so they’re hungry and looking forward to varsity and it’s exciting.”
On losing Top 11 and K-State signee Logan Dold:
“Any time you lose a Division I football, player, it’s hard to lose that. We don’t have a lot of those.”
So there you go, you have Garden Plain’s summer update. What’s going to happen with this team this season? Who will be their key players?

Interesting…
Here’s a coach who just won a state championship and he obviously is not allowing the sport to rule his life. I like the statement that the Owls don’t do a team camp and listed the $150 as part of the reason.
I’m a Sumner County man and have always been partial to Conway Springs, but I can’t but feel Todd Puetz is a class act.

Logan Dold is truely a class act athlete and will demonstrate that in the following years to come. :)
