Summer softball

Let me get it out of the way: I messed up. I put Jesi Goldring in the softball story today as a junior-to-be at Rose Hill. She’s from Mulvane. Not sure where I got Rose Hill, but I did. A definite mistake on my part, it’s corrected on the web version of the story and I’ll have a correction in tomorrow’s paper.

On to other summer softball stuff.

I spent part of the weekend out at TRYC for the story I did that ran today. It was fun to watch the games and all the people in attendance. I talked to quite a few people, all devout fans of their daughters’ teams.

I wasn’t there for the championship games, so all I know about the winners is that the Renegades won the 14A and 18A state tournaments. I tried to find the other champs on the web site, to no avail.

So if you know who won, pass it on. If you saw a good player, let me hear about it. A team? Fill us in.
OK, onto softball and our coverage of summer softball. We do very little with actual coverage in the fashion of high school seasons. That’s because there are tournaments all over the place, hundreds of softball, soccer, baseball, swim teams, etc., for us to actually cover. We put results in the Hometown sports section — so if you have results, that’s where we run them. Feel free to e-mail the results to hometown@wichitaeagle.com.

What I’m trying to do with my Summer in Season series is hit on different aspects of summer and sports. I’ve written about the Southwest Boys Club (baseball), lacrosse, Goose Doughty’s tennis camp, and now this softball story. My goal was not to cover the state tournament as I would a Kansas State High School tournament, but to go into it, find a story and write a feature. It was a side that I was interested in and I appreciate all those who helped me out, whether they were quoted or not.

OK, so are there any other teams that need to be written about? I’d like to write about the Storm, could someone e-mail me (jchadwick@wichitaeagle.com or joanna@varsitykansas.com) a number for their coach?

Don’t know his number but his name is Dave Milspaugh. His 18U team was at the Colorado Sparkler this past week. Don’t know how his team did but one of his players got hurt. Hope she is okay. The Wichita Wave 16U was also there. They finished 1st in there pool and 3rd overall in the 1st place pool out of 153 teams. It was good to see them rebound from a disapointing state appearence. Appartenly they are getting heathly. They also had a player perform prior to the Kelli Pickler Concert. I was proud to tell my umpire buddies I was from Kansas when see sang. Some of there parents told me they would post her performance on the teams (wichita wave) website.
