The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

What is KC East?

I know when I saw this, I wondered where the heck this school had suddenly appeared from. Goodness knows there’s always a school closing, combining or opening. Remember just a couple years ago when St. James Academy in Lenexa came on the scene.

Well, I saw KC East when John Talbert was throwing discus and shot put. He finished with the state’s best discus and shot put throws but wasn’t at the state meet. I was confused.

But today I met his sister, Sarah. She explained that she and her brother are siblings of Rachel, who is competing at Oral Roberts. And they are/have been homeschooled and are now affiliated with KC East, which is the name of a homeschool network that gives homeschooled kids the chance to play sports like basketball, football, etc. Rachel had the state’s top discus throw in 2005 while competing for Wichita Homeschool, which the Talberts are no longer part of.

Whew. Kind of a long explanation, but I can’t tell you how happy I was to find out that I hadn’t missed the formation of a new school.
