Big Ups (Vol. II) to Logan Watkins
July 7, 2008 @ 12:07 p.m. by jlongI know this is kind of late, but congrats to the former Goddard baseball standout. Wichita State would have been a great place for him, but to get $600,000 to do something you love is hard to turn down.
Important to note is that $100,000 of that is designated for school.
I had the chance to see Watkins play several times this past season and came away impressed every time. He’s a very talented player, obviously, but his poise often set him apart from the rest.

I could really use that kind of money right now. I’m busting out a baseball tonight to make a comeback.

“Way to stick to your number and not give in” +1.
The 4th round pick in the 2007 draft got a $200,000 signing bonus to leave Wichita State. And then Watkins gets essentially $500,000 in the 21 round slot. This kid deserves all that he is going to receive in life. Good Luck Watkins, and as always, Go Goddard.

I agree with “The Lion’s Roar”. What a great newspaper, until a certain teacher came in and destroyed the lives of all writers.

Just wanted to fill people in on how this signing bonus thing works. Yes he did get 500,000 which will probably be broke into two payments which will be taxed. At best, he walks away with 300,000 to work with, or get a good head start on life. That is a good thing. This 100,000 set aside for school is a joke. He can use this money within boundaries. First of all, he will have no time to take a full load of classes between instructional fall ball and spring training. If he doesn’t take at least 12 credit hours, he throws away money. That 100,000 is money that he doesn’t have set up in his own ’school account’. The Chicago Cubs have it and he has to pay for school and get reinbursed. If he doesn’t take a full load he loses, one semester of money which is how they came up with that 100,000. I will be rooting for Mr. Watkins but I wish he would have gone to college and received his education, or at least got close to graduating, and then signed. He may not have received as much money but he would have let his body mature and his skills would be way more advanced.
