Wichita’s Perry Ellis: Invite to Reebok All-American Camp
July 7, 2008 @ 1:35 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
Perry Ellis, the soon-to-be freshman at Heights, is on the list for the Reebok All-American Camp at Philadelphia University. The camp, which started yesterday, has 120 athletes and he’s the only one from Kansas. College coaches are invited to watch games starting Tuesday.
Here’s the link to the RAAC roster
Here’s what the camp is all about.
Here’s a blog post that includes Ellis or check it out below. (I left it as is, keeping the W. Chita, Kansas for the humor of it — hey, we all make mistakes!)
Perry Ellis 6-8 FR 2012 W. Chita, KS
The best overall young prospect in the camp, especially when you consider just how young he is and how much he produces on the floor. He has very good size and length and is very versatile around the floor, capable of shooting and handling the basketball like that of a guard. Very skilled. You will be hearing this name much more nationally throughout his continued development as a player. Bright future.
It’s nice to see a Wichita kid included with some of the top talent in the country.

Could you guys gather up some information on the Spiece MoKan Wichita basketball team? It’s a collection of the top Wichita players. Spiece MoKan also has a team for the KC area as well. Perry Ellis plays on the team and i was wondering who else did too.

Nino and Perry were both invited to the Reebok breakout underclass camp in Chicago. They both made the all star team which I think was top 20 out of over 124 players. Nino wasn’t in the top 8 that got invited to Philly. Just thought I would clarify yes 2 from Kansas in Chicago but only one from Kansas in Philly. Perry and Nino are both with the Speice Mo-Kan organization. Nino is going to be a sophmore.

Anyone in their right mind knows that the top collection of talent is the Wichita T-Wolves. Check the 2006 Kingwood Classic in Houston, the 08 Kingwood Classic, any MAYB finale or kickoff for the past 4 years. Check the JJ Huddle/buckeye report website out of Ohio who lists the T-Wolves as a top 25 team not in Kansas but in the nation. Bye the way, 3 of the top 15 teams on that list have been beaten by the T-Wolves this summer. The T-Wolves just won the Ncaa Exsposure event at the south ymca defeating an 08 grad team with 3 college signees. They also defeated the HMC Select premiere team that are all incoming seniors. 6 members of this team saw varsity action in at least 3 games this past season as freshmen. CLFAN needs to do some more research. Congrats to Perry on his accomplishments thus far. The city league will be interesting this year.

Actually, the Nino Williams kid is from Leavenworth and can play. I just saw a schedule of the Honda Summer Classic being played this upcoming weekend in Overland Park, and i see some class of 2011 kids who will bump heads in pool play. Nino Williams (spiece mo-kan), Brett Comer (kansas city pump n run), Perry Ellis of Wichita Heights 2012(spiece mo-kan), and Ja’ln Williams of Wichita East (Kansas City Bruins/Tarheels). Should be a good tournament. Over 200 college coaches attended last year.

It will be real interesting this year and next couple. sprtsfn22 is right, the T-Wolves are really good. That Houston tournament is huge, I also seen they were ranked nationally. And as far as anyone can tell the Ellis kids summer team has not won anything all summer. Obviously that does not change his talent, youd just think theyd win alot. In fact T-Wolves beat them at least once that I know of. That team is the real deal! But Perry is gonna bring alot of attention to the city league (which is great for him and wish him well) but I also think that it will be good for all the kids in the city. I heard at one tournament last week that Heights may be starting two freshman, and that Northwest may be playing three of them! If anyone has any info on that I would sure be curios to hear. It’s always been rare to see a freshman start, last one I remember was Young from East. So I’ll believe it when I see it, but thats what a couple people told me.

Are any of the players on the t-wolves ranked nationally? Just curious. Also when the t-wolves played the Ellis kids team they had kids going to be jr’s so you would expect them to beat a team with 5 freshman right? But what I heard it wasn’t an easy win it was a close game.

The T-Wolves are a 9th grade team. Well going into 10th grade. (at least all the good players). And being ranked nationally by some service means? I can tell you from experience that all you have to do is pay to go to one of these camps
and then you will be ranked. so basically anyone can pay to have son or daughter ranked. so that in itself is not hard to do. But Perry is ranked high so thats different and means he has played well at these camps. But just getting ranked takes nothing but paying to send them to one of these camps. And if some of the t-wolves have been to any of these camps, then they are ranked somewhere. And there are a million different rankings. So use them for what you want.

I have a question, Joanna, maybe you or John can help me out. Are all these camps created equally? Aren’t there some camps country club camps and parents just send them by paying money and some are invites only? Do you know anything about that? Or does anyone out there in blog land that knows anything about that?

You don’t have to pay to get into all the camps. There are some that are invite only. For example the Reebok All American camp it was invite only you could not pay to get into this camp. I am sure that Joanna or John could get us some more information on other camps like that. Maybe this article will help.

Top players in the country DO NOT PAY FOR CAMP! Perry is an elite player. He will never pay for anything! I live in Dallas TX and people in Wichita are so far behide i’m surprise that Perry is getting national attention. The bottom line Perry Ellis should move out of the state because I also lived in Wichita and I know for a fact that 72.9% of all are going to hate on the kid until you see him fall flat on his face. Have any one wondered why Maurice Evans don’t come back and put on basketball camp and help out Wichita? Because yall are HATERS!!!!! HOLLA!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the spiece mo-kan group of kids…and they are half 8th graders half 9th graders. They did well in the MAYB exposure camp yesterday. The other kid going to Heights with Perry is Gavin Thurman. Jordan Phillips is on this team as well 15 year old (6′5″ 250lbs.) as well as Hayden Harris, Keaton Lewis, Dreamus, and a kid from Oklahoma named Garrett…who just graduated from the 8th grade.
Many of the tournaments that spiece-mokan has attended has been minus Perry Ellis for a few games due to numerous camps he’s been invited to.

Most (Not All I realize) you can pay to get into. The one that Perry was at last year the Adidas Elite Camp in Ohio. I had always heard was one of these also. But I’m holding a invitation in my hand right now that was mailed to my house (for my son obviously, not me) and it says on it that only top 150 players in the nation will be there. Well obviously thats not correct. Its probably the first 150 that sign up!! But we stil thought long and hard about sending him there, just so he could get ranked somewhere by someone. Maybe I’ll change my mind down the line. But my wife made me realize it would not be very smart of us. If he turns out any good then coaches will find him, I’m quite sure of that. Don’t think in this day and age, much gets by the coaches. My point was most of these camps anyone can get into regardless of what people say. And any of the kids can get ranked. Maybe it can help get a scholarship (I dont really believe that though) Mostly It just hypes the kids more, which isn’t always good for the kid. And about kansas being way behind Texas? I would think everyone here is rooting for Perry Just like Wichita does for all the kids that have came out of here over the years, and one more thing. The 13U, 14U & 15U teams from Wichita ROUTINLY beat teams from Texas. And the many games I have watched have not even been good games most of the time. Sorry I had to mention that.

I guess if you gonna pay, you better be at the top and get your money’s worth! I would hate to pay and be at the bottom of the barrel. Thanks for the insight, though - that helps! If my child were to get one, you helped answer the question, it’s not worth the money and time to be ranked and seen by coaches!

Well all camps ARE NOT created equal. Some camps are Invite Only and then some you can pay to get into.
This biggest difference in Invite Only camps and the others is the exposure to college coaches and scouts. In a camp like this I’m sure ever major D-1 program had somebody there, if not the head coach.

bigrog, Loving that you’re coming to the blog, wondering why you’re hating on Kansas and calling everyone here stupid. Seriously. As for Texas having more than Kansas, why is anyone surprised by that? Texas has 23 million people, Kansas has 2.6 million. It’s like why does a 6A school of 2,000 have more Division I athletes than a 1A school of 50.

So obviously they are trying to do a sell job to get you to send your son or daughter. And see how they have the “so called” experts there just to rank you. I have no idea who this Joe guy is your talking about as he was not listed on anything we received. And the Jr. Phenom is a totally different camp. One other thing if Wichita could have all our best 14U players on one team instead of breaking off into two seperate squads (due to grown ups not getting along) The team would compete for titles at the bigest tournaments around the country.

bigrog you know as well as i do the one major difference between the texas kids and the kansas kids are the grade exceptions. teams in texas generally hold their kids back a grade to gain an advantage. in essence kids are repeating a grade they just passed for athletic purposes only. when a 9th grade kansas team matches up with a 9th grade texas team those kids are usually already 16 years old. personally, any parent who holds their kids back for that reason has a problem with reality. Bye the way, Wichita is not “behind” you guys in texas , our problem is we are not unified! When a couple of coaches let go of their egos and unite it’s over for the texas teams.

sprtsfn22 — my husband was just talking about how there’s a lot of 19- and 20-year-old high school athletes coming out of Texas. I personally think that is crazy. Aren’t parents ready for their kids to move on and be independent?
Seriously, keeping them back simply for athletics is so sad and messed up. And we wonder why so many athletes end up bankrupt and making silly decisions –too many have no idea what priorities are and should be.

sprtsfn22 and Joanna’s husband are both correct. I cant speak for football (but always heard the stories), but I have seen several grade exceptions on the Texas teams in the basketball tournaments. And I COMPLETLEY agree with sprtsfn22 on one subject. If the Wichita 14 year olds on Perry Ellis team were with the 14 year olds on the Kansas Hoyas team (all wichita kids) They would be VERY competative at this Main Event tournament in Las Vegas coming up. (July 22-27). They would have great guards and would be deep with size also at 6′8″, 6′6″, 6′5″, 6′5″ and 6′3″. Instead they will send two teams the Speice is playing 15U and the Hoyas 14U. I will be up there and will root for both Wichita teams along with the 13U Wichita Bulls. As it is all three teams will represent Wichita just fine I’m sure. And If there is somewhere on here to post I will post how they are all doing while the tournament is going on. Oh and by the way The Kansas Hoyas first game 22nd is against a Texas team and the Spice Mo-kan first game is against a Texas team.

WELL I LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS… LIKE I SAID IN THE FIRST PLACE KANSAS IS BEHIDE IN THE TIMES. IF A PARENT HOLD THERE KID BACK FOR BASKETBALL THAT ON THEM. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT AND FROM THE LOOKS OF IT THE COACHES ARE COOL WITH IT TOO…… I DONT HAVE TO HATE ON KANSAS YALL DO A GOOD JOB YOURSELF. AS FOR AS HOLDING KIDS BACK, I’LL JUST SAY THIS. YOUR GOING TO HOLD THEM BACK NOW OR LATER…..MEANING HOLD THEM BACK IN 8TH GRADE OR SEND THEM TO BUTLER OR STEVE ECK….. AS FOR YALL PUTTING THE TEAMS TOGETHER,THAT WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. YALL CAN’T PLAY TOGETHER BECAUSE EVERYBODY WANT THEIR KID TO BE
(PERRY). INSTEAD OF PLAYING WITH HIM AND WHEN THE COACHES COME IN THE GYM, JUST WORK HARD AND PLAY AND THEN YOU WILL GET SOME D1′S OUT OF WICHITA!!! HOLLA!!!

In response to kfan, if you go to espn.com and look at the top recruits in the country(class of 2011) , when you scroll all the way down to the W’s, you will see Ja’ln Williams East Hs, Ks. or you can take a shortcut and click on to the state of Kansas and it lists Brett Comer of Overland Park and the Williams kid from East. It may not be a national “ranking” , but looking at the names on that list he’s in pretty good company. He also received an invite to the adidas phenom 150 camp based off his performance at the Kingwood Classic this past spring.

I love this blog!! Everyone is an expert on the lives of 14-15 year olds. I hope they all do well and that everyone gets rank and goes D-1 and plays in the league. But what will it matter if they don’t get into college and graduates? Look at the past to see the future. Name me one player from Wichita that has played(not a walkon) for WSU on a basketball scholarship in the last 5 years? If a mid-major isn’t recruiting from the city league why would a high major come here? I know WSU tried to get Jordan, Taj and Brandon, they are the exception to the rule. Most kids here go to a JUCO…because of grades/skill level. And most /not all are done after 2 years. Go to the Evergreen League and see all the former “can’t miss D-1 player” playing on Sat/Sun. Basketball is suppose to be the ride to get you to college to help with your future. Basketball shouldn’t be the future just the ride to get you to the future. Most of these kids are being feeded a pipe dream of going to the league or playing D-1. The goal should be that they get a quality education that was paid for by a skill that God bless them with no matter were the school is or what level. If we were just as insightful with thier education as we are with basketball camps/ranking and pub for thier AAU team more of them would be going to a 4 year college. Hey but time will tell…..I look forward to seeing them at the Evergreen in a few years…..lol.
