Rival’s Kansas Preseason Top 15
July 7, 2008 @ 3:46 p.m. by jlongBy J. Long
I’ll save you guys the trouble and will post the list here.
1. Bryce Brown - RB - East (No surprise here)
2. Darian Kelly -DB - Girard
3. Jaydan Bird - LB - Conway Springs
4. Marshall Musil - Ath - Lacrosse
5. Kevin Young - DE - Olathe North
6. Ian Knight - DE - Heights
7. Huldon Tharp - LB - Mulvane
8. Riley Spencer - OL - Hesston
9. Tanner Poppe - TE - Girard
10. Darron Harvey - DB - Shawnee Mission West
11. Duane Maxwell - RB - Kansas City Washington
12. Jake Morin - OL - St. Thomas Aquinas
13. Colby Duranleau - OL - Northwest
14. Alex Schooler - DE - Collegiate
15. Justin Aumen - OL - Junction City
Outside of Bryce, Jaydan Bird, Ian Knight, and Huldon Tharp I haven’t heard of most of these guys. But I’m sure that will change.
You can find the list from rivals here.
Two things really standout about this list to me. The first thing is that there are no quarterbacks on this list. While the Arizona list also is null in the quarterback position, Texas has four signal callers in its Top 15. Maybe I’m the only one that finds this weird, but seems to me that there would be at least one QB from Class 5A or 6A that could crack the list. Does this mean I should expect to see a lot of running in my first season of covering Kansas high school football?
The second thing was that out of the entire list Kansas State didn’t have a single commitment. Seriously, not even one. Of course most of the kids didn’t sign during the early signing period however, Kansas has three of these guys so far. Kelly and Young both in the top five signed and they also grabbed Spencer the number eight selection.
College recruiting is similar to high school popularity contests. The team that can sign the most top quality players early usually has the advantage when it comes to signing some of the late decision makers.
So I suggest that K-State better get on it before Kansas becomes the football and basketball school.

Looks like another JUCO heavy class for K-State.
The reason there aren’t any quarterbacks on that list is that the quarterback play in Kansas won’t be very good next year.
Fortunately for me, the team I root for doesn’t need to throw the ball.

The past two seasons, Kansas has had more than their fair share of good quarterbacks. This season, the experts in Brentwood don’t see any quality in Kansas. This might help you.
Jake Snodgrass, Derby
C.J. Madison, West Elk
Garret Gould, Maize
Ty Zimmerman, Junction City
Taylor Euler, Emporia
TJ McGreevy, Topeka Hayden
Matt Byers, Wichita East
Tyler Roberts, Silver Lake
Jordan Gosch, Mulvane
Blake Bell, Bishop Carroll, Jr.
Aaron Hansen, Andover, Jr.
A few quarterbacks to watch. Roberts passed for over 2K last season. Madison could reach the 5K mark for a career this season, Snodgrass, Gosch, Zimmerman and Gould were all over 1500 yds. Gould is rumored to be bypassing football this season. Big mistake.

“Gould is rumored to be bypassing football this season. Big mistake.”
Haha, on the contrary. Not a big mistake. This kid is more highly touted in baseball and is making a business decision. Don’t judge unless you are in a position of choice like that.

Gould will gain nothing by giving up football except the opportunity to be All-State in two sports, and his fastball could use some time off.

I believe the Rivals list is just the Class of 2009.
The quality of 2009 QBs is nothing special, with or without
Gould.
Bell has the best potential of the bunch. Of the 2009 class, I lean toward McGreevy from the names on the list.

“Gould will gain nothing by giving up football except the opportunity to be All-State in two sports, and his fastball could use some time off.”
Maybe Gould doesn’t care about honors like All-State, and instead wants to work on his future career. And there is more to his baseball game than just fastballs.

How about 4A Girard Trojans with two guys in the top 10.

I think he’d gain the opportunity to not be injured playing a sport that is going to get him nowhere out of high school.
So lets see…
a)Play football….possibly get injured and end his baseball career.
b)Or get drafted in the first couple rounds of the mlb draft and get a million-plus signing bonus.
that’s tough.

Better pitchers than him didn’t get drafted that high this year.
U’re only young once, might as well enjoy it, and he might just have to rely on a couple football players to help him win a game in baseball cause he ain’t got no Marasco, Hege or Cocking to hit next season.
Fifth round money at best.

Can anyone explain to me how Musil made this list??? He numbers from last year are nothing to write home about. I don’t know what he did at the OU camp to get offered but it must have been something spectacular.

Thats why we’re not college coaches hitman. Musil had offers from TCU, Tulsa, Colorado State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville and Missouri he turned down to go to Oklahoma. I guess he blew away more coaches than just OU’s

If the kid wants to just play baseball ,more power to him. “If” this kid wants to focus and train to have a chance to be drafted whats the problem ? someone said oh he needs to play football because his classmates play baseball ? do what ??? Is this a “cult” or High School ? Ya if his buddies want to give to him a little crap ok,etc . What i dont get is how is it “OUR” bussiness do tell this kid what to do ? Am i lost on this ???

I would just hope he isn’t giving up football to chase something that isn’t really there, and then he looks back and thinks, “dang, I liked football, wish I had finished out my senior season.”
I have no idea of the kid’s baseball talent.

I’m sure he is not going to give up a sport he loves to play baseball. There is another reason behind this. “5th round money at best”, that is pretty good for a high schooler out of Kansas. I would take it. Or get injured and not get drafted.

Ok, first of all garrett can make his own choice, he is old enough to do it without people who dont even know him making it for him. If he wants to sit out football, then he should be able to without people getting on his back. And i can guarantee you that he isnt chasing something that isnt there

i know for a fact that the kid is making a great choice by taking football off this year. The kid was the kansas pitcher of the year. So im pretty sure that he isnt quitting football for nothing, he is getting recruited by some of the best D1 schools in the country so im pretty sure he knows what he is doing.
