South Haven football

In my ongoing quest to bring more small area schools onto the blog, I spoke with South Haven football coach David Hughes, whose team finished second last season in 8-Man II with a 12-1 record. I tried to contact him last week, but he was cutting wheat. Thanks to the rain, I got him this afternoon.

This is what he had to say:

“I think we ought to be pretty competitive. I don’t know if we’re going to be as  good as we were last year, that will depend on some kids stepping up and how willing they are to work.

We return four starters on offense , four on defense, but those seniors we lost were key. Such as Jake Davidson, Cass Meyers, Wesley Scott, who was our center. That’s really going to be the toughest position to fill. I think (it’s important) period on the offense, because it’s a position where he’s goin to touch the ball every time. It takes a special kid to do that. I’ve been blessed the last couple years to have pretty good centers. We’ll have to have some sophomores and juniors step up.
We return three linemen. What’s interesting is three of those linemen were on our state championship 4×800 relay team. We’re pretty lean on the line, but we’ll have pretty  good speed.
We feel, of course, those four seniors we lost off our defense were crucial, but I think have some kids that will step up. I’m just not sure how we’ll use them.”

In the summer program _ “We’ve been lifting weights. We have a summer program of , weight lifting, footwork, speed development. We had a pretty good turnout.  It was really my question mark, and there were a few that I wanted to have more of a presence. That was the thing about those seniors, they did it all. They went out for three sports, they went through everything we asked them to do. That’s what it takes.”

David Huges is a great coach, and South Haven is lucky to have him!
What a great year it was last year, and we look forward to following them this year.
The seniors lost from last year will have an impact but Hughes will have them ready to go!
    Good luck South Haven!
Cass Myers and Jake Davidson will be missed! They are great kids!
