Two-time All-stater Travis Releford

Bishop Miege’s Travis Releford, who was named to The Eagle’s All-State team twice, was named to the U.S. Basketball 18-u team.
Obviously an honor and it’s nice to see a Kansan get it. Releford didn’t make it to our All-State banquet this year because he couldn’t miss any more school — he was going to travel to Europe to play a little bit after our banquet. But I met him when he was a junior and he came down. He’s a very mild-mannered kid, but boy, when you see him on the court, he can fly with the best.

The first time I saw Releford play was the summer between his 8th and 9th grade year while coaching my son’s AAU/MAYB team. Early in the second half he stole a pass on the wing, drove the length of the court and hammered it home. After the game I visited with him and told him that he was by far the best player I’d seen at his age and that I expected big things from him. He came across as a very humble, nice kid. I am not shocked by his success. I wish him well.

I watched Releford in 2006-07 at the 5A state tournament — and his dunks were the best I’ve seen by a high schooler. So thrilling to watch.

Are you sure he was selected over some of those Texas kids that are supposed to be so much better than Kansas boys?

OK, I think we’re talking football when it comes to Kansas and Texas. Anyway, if we’re completely honest here, Releford’s really a Missouri boy.
